Cricket fans; buckle in and prepare for the cricket fare to be dished up at Westpac Park this summer. Before Christmas, Westpac Park in Hamilton will host the fiery Pakistanis as they take on the Black Caps in the first of a two-match Test Series.
A team surrounded by controversy but full of talent, the Pakistanis will be wanting to prove a point at a ground where they have enjoyed success in the past. With an express attack headed by Shoaib Akhtar and the powerhouse batting lead by Inzamam-ul-Haq fireworks are sure to eventuate.
When the Black Caps return to Westpac Park in early March to battle the South Africans, they will be facing a re-emerging giant. The form of the South Africans in England has been much improved under the decisive leadership of new captain and prolific run scorer Graeme Smith. The Black Caps have a fantastic record at Westpac Park and enjoy playing Test cricket in Hamilton. The selection of a number of Northern Districts players in the national side adds to the excitement of the occasion.
The State Northern Knights get a wonderful opportunity to display their skills against international opposition when they meet South Africa in a day-night, one-day match as a tour opener on February 12. Fans will remember the remarkable match played in similar circumstances against England two seasons ago.
And the women get their chance to strut their stuff as well. New Zealand's White Ferns will play the Australian women in two one-day internationals again at Westpac Park in mid- February. New Zealand v Australia sports battles are always played with that extra edge and these two games will be eagerly anticipated.
Don't forget the mighty State Northern Knights will be on the crusade to retain New Zealand's most prestigious domestic trophy the State Shield, and at least four of their home games will this season be played at Westpac Park. Day Night one-day cricket action at Westpac Park is true entertainment with a special quality in that enjoyment is derived from being part of an audience in a happy, safe environment.
John Turkington, Northern Districts' chief executive, remarked: "We are delighted with the mix of our cricket product we are able to supply this summer for fans of Northern Districts cricket and the people of Hamilton. Hosting two international Test matches in the city in one season is proof that Westpac Park is recognized as one of New Zealand's premier cricket venues"
