.Gen Tauqir Zia will meet President Mohammad Rafiq Tarar tomorrow
(Saturday) morning here at the Presidency and Justice Malik Qayyum's
report alongwith with the recommendation's summary on the match-fixing
and betting would be moot point of the important meeting.
A copy of the recommendation summary in the light of the 176 -page
findings of Justice Qayyum's report was sent on Thursday evening to
President Tarar who is the Patron of the PCB, the sources said.
Talking to Dawn, Lt. Gen. Tauqir Zia said that it was upto the patron
what directives be given in the light of the Justice Qayyum Report.
He said the mess should be cleared once and for all. If the report
recommends life bans then those proven guilty should be banned for
life and if there are penalties on certain players then those should
be imposed.
When asked whether or not this would prove damaging for a number of
cricketers presently on the West Indies tour, the chairman said that
as far as he was concerned the bans and penalties recommended will be
upheld.
ThePCB chief said that as far ashis understanding is concerned the
ICC's recent declarations will become operative henceforth.
The general confirmed that Ramiz Raja, member of PCB advisory
committee, held a detailed meeting with him before leaving back to WI
where director cricket operations Yawar Saeed has also joined him from
London after attending the emergency ICC moot.
The chairman PCB said that he had already met Justice Qayyum and has
discussed the matter in detail. In fact over the last week there have
been a string of key meetings held, starting with chairman PCB
briefing Chief Executive GeneralPervez Musharraf on the cricket
affairs, then Justice Qayyum met the President and the chairman PCB.
Lt-Gen. Tauqir Zia said that he intends to take alongthe departments
and associations in any future revamping of the cricket system.
The chairman said that he would definitely invite all the
representatives of the departments and associations for consultations
before going for a major change in domestic cricket structure.
Commenting on Iqbal Qasim's expulsion from the selection committee,
the general said the former Test cricketer was an employee of the
board and under that contract he was given specific responsibilities.
It was stated the Iqbal Qasim will have to submit a written
explanation to PCB over his outburst in the press, besides, he will
carry on with his job of Under-15 preliminary selections till May 12.
