KARACHI, July 1: The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided in principle
never to send its team to Hong Kong for future sixes tournament,
according to a spokesman of the PCB.
The decision follows the failure of the Cricket World International
(CWI) of Hong Kong who regularly organise sixes tournament, to honour
their commitment to pay the PCB US$14,000 for allowing Pakistani
players to play in a 1997 contest.
When PCB chairman Khalid Mahmood was contacted, he admitted that the
PCB have not received the guaranteed money of US$ 14,000 from the Hong
Kong tournament organisers.
He stated since the PCB had mentioned the amount as receivable in its
accounts, there was no other way but to write it off. "In order to
keep the records straight, it has to be wiped off the books," Mahmood
said.
The writing-off of the amount is one of the items on the agenda of
July 5 PCB Council meeting to be held at Lahore.
Mahmood said PCB made desperate attempts for the recovery of the money
but in vain. "Sometimes we were informed of bankruptcy while at others
we were told that the organising committee has split into two
following in house dispute."
The PCB chairman, discussing the other items of agenda, said the PCB
were negotiating with Javed Miandad and Mohsin Khan for the job of
coach. He said Majid Khan, the chief executive, was handling the case
and would be briefing the council on the issue.
"Majid is discussing the terms and conditions with both of them.
However, it will be upto the council to decide who would be more
suitable for the senior team's job," he added.
Mahmood hinted that if Miandad gets the nod of the council, Mohsin
might then get the junior team's coaching assignment.
"Personally, I believe that the best man should be associated with the
junior team like Australia have attached Allan Border with their
Under-19 string. Youngsters at that stage need more guidance and
coaching than the senior team in which more emphasis is on chalking
out game plans and match strategies."
On the appointment of a selection committee, Khalid Mahmood said a few
names were under consideration. The names, he continued, would be put
before the council which will discuss the merits of the individual.
Informed sources said Javed Burki, Dr Zafar Altaf, Intikhab Alam and
Zaheer Abbas were in line for the job.
Following is the agenda of the meeting:
- Confirmation of minutes of last council meeting held on Feb 2, 1998;
- Arising if any to approve;
- Audited accounts for the year 1996;
- To approve budget estimate for the year 1998-99;
- Approval of contracts relating to TransWorld International and sponsors i.e Pepsi Cola International, Wills, A&Z Grindleys, Shell, Phillips, Paktel and Crown Sports and Marketing Private Limited;
- Approval of coach for Pakistan cricket team;
- Approval of coach for Pakistan Under-19 team;
- To approve team, captain, vice-captain and manager for the
forthcoming tours:
a) Super 8s tournament in Malaysia in July;
b) Pakistan Under-19 tour of England (July-September); - To consider approval of Director Cricket Academy;
- Financial aids to Islamabad Cricket Association for stadium development;
- To write-off US$14,000 payable by CWI of Hong Kong to PCB;
- To review and approve formation of the following PCB committees:
i) Selection Committee;
ii) Disciplinary Committee;
iii) Selection Committee for Juniors;
iv) (Qadhafi Stadium) Shops Committee. - Approval of usage of unsold or extra seats of hospitality boxes during matches at Qadhafi Stadium and National Stadium;
- Approval of Pakistan cricket team's foreign tours;
- Post facto approval of physiotherapist for Pakistan cricket team, Dr Dan Kiesel.
