Reon King: Just a bad patch

Today, we present a second set of interviews with young players on tour with the West Indies senior team in England

20-Aug-2000
Today, we present a second set of interviews with young players on tour with the West Indies senior team in England.
Please note these interviews were conducted prior to the fourth Test between West Indies and England which ended on Friday.
Reon King
'The tour has not been so good from my personal results. I've not been bowling as well or as consistently as I did in the Caribbean against Pakistan and Zimbabwe.
'I set a high standard in the Caribbean and I was confident coming to England but things have not worked out well so far.
'Starting tomorrow (fourth Test), I hope things will fall into place. I have received a lot of advice from other bowlers ' (Courtney) Walsh and (Curtly) Ambrose and Ian Bishop (former West Indies bowler) ' and I am working hard with the coaching staff.
'I don't think there's anything wrong with my technique. I think it's a lack of confidence because my rhythm has not been right and that's affecting me. Occasionally, things have felt right but it's been patchy and that's reflected in my performances (eight wickets in three Tests).
'The last One-Day International versus England was my best showing.
'Everything went well for me there but somehow that has not happened too often on this tour.
'I didn't set a goal in terms of the number of wickets I wanted to take.
'My aim was just to be more consistent than in the Caribbean where I got 20 wickets in five Tests.
'I have to be patient and keep searching within myself to resolve this problem. Most bowlers go through bad patches and I am sure I will be able to come back and serve the team well.
'It's a matter of concern that we, the younger bowlers, are not doing so well but I feel we will be able to live up to the expectations of us.
'This is my first tour of England and it's a good experience for me, getting used to life as a professional cricketer.
'It's a bit tough playing and travelling all the time but that's the job.
'As a bowler, the English pitches give you more to work with because the ball swings more.
'There is also something for batsmen because the surfaces are better than in the Caribbean."
Nixon McLean
'I've been doing fairly well in the games I've played. My performance is in keeping with my goals.
'My main aim was to get into the Test XI and now I'm in the team for the fourth Test I will try to do my best to ensure we win this Test and the series.
'We, the young bowlers, have been criticised for being inconsistent so I am going in there to give as much support as I can and to pull my weight in the bowling.
'Overall, I am happy with the way I am bowling. I have the most first-class wickets on the tour so far ' 26, I think ' but my batting could be better.
'I have not scored as many runs as I wanted so far but I believe I can improve this.
'I played county cricket for two seasons for Hampshire so I am familiar with the conditions and I know how to exploit them. Also, I know a lot of these players and their strengths and their weaknesses.
'I am definitely enjoying my first tour of England. This has been another step in my learning curve and I hope this will contribute to my development as a bowler and as cricketer on the whole.
Mahendra Nagamootoo
'It's great to be on tour with the West Indies team. I have waited a long time for this opportunity and I am enjoying it.
'My other major objective is to get into the Test team and I have been working towards that.
'As a spinner, playing in England is very different and can be difficult because these pitches don't turn as much as back home and you can't try too many things.
'It is also sometimes quite cold. I have just been trying to bowl a consistent line, keep things as tight as I can and vary the pace of deliveries occasionally.
'I have had mixed fortunes on tour. There were some games that I was not happy with, like against Yorkshire. I think my best performance was against Glamorgan when I took four for 12. That pitch was turning ' it was a good wicket for a spinner.
'I am looking forward to the rest of this tour and improving on what I have done so far.
