The South Africa team wore black arms bands on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in respect of Solomon Makosana, the President of the Western Province Cricket Association, who died on Thursday night, aged 58, after a long illness.
Makosana, a former school principal, administered cricket for more than 30 years particularly in Langa Township were he played club cricket from 1972.
Gerald Majola, the chief executive of Cricket South Africa, said: "Solomon Makosana was a pioneer of the development of cricket in the Western Cape and throughout South Africa. He was a champion of the previously disadvantaged, and his administrative abilities opened many doors for the youth of these communities".
In reacting to Makosana's death Goolam Rajah, South Africa's manger in Sri Lanka, said: "On behalf of the team and management, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends".
