One of the most outstanding sportsmen produced by Dharmaraja College, Kandy, Daya Jayasundera was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police with effect from February 1.

Jayasundera is also Deputy Commandant of the Special Task Force.

Jayasundera represented his school at cricket, soccer, hockey and boxing from 1960 to 1963. He excelled in rugby after leaving school as it was not a sport which was played during his time.

He represented the Police at rugby from 1968-77 leading the team in 1976 and later becoming their coach for a number of years. He represented his country in the position of a flanker from 1971 to 1974, playing in the Asiad in Hong Kong in 1972.

He is also an international rugby referee having officiated in the 1978 Asiad held in - and has followed a rugby referees course at Wales in 1987.

Jayasundera is the second in a family of seven sporting brothers and boxed for Sri Lanka Schools at the Indo-Ceylon meet in 1961.

A double century partnership of 207 for the third wicket between Anura Bulankulame (123) and Sanjeeva Perera (90) saw Moratuwa SC beat Lankan CC on the first innings in a high scoring division II match concluded at Katubedde Campus grounds over the weekend.

A magnificent century by Diluksaha Jayasuriya (179) and fine double by Chinthana Jayawardena (75 and 3 for 17) helped Mabroc Teas, Kiribathgoda beat Air Lanka Catering easily by 226 runs in their M.C.A. division D Cricket tournament match played recently.

Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka treasurer Nuski Mohamed was elected president of Saracens Sports Club at their 61st annual general meeting held in Colombo.

Shibly Vilcassim, a former executive committee member of the BCCSL was elected the club secretary.

Mohamed Macan Markar, a former president of the club was elected the new patron. The vice patrons are A. C. Macan Markar, Gerry Gooneratne, Ferin Careem, Mecci Macan Markar, Sam Markar and M. Refai.

A fine spell of bowling by Kelum Gangodawila (5 for 23) helped Nalanda to dismiss St.Anthony's, Katugastota for 108 runs on the opening day of their Elephant Lemonade Cup inter-school cricket tournament match which began at NCC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

In reply the Nalandians reached 132 for 6 with opener Sukitha Peiris making a top score of 61 with the help of seven boundaries.

The match will be continued at 9.45 a.m today.

D.S.Senanayake were well set to take a good first innings lead after having dismissed Richmond College for 159 runs on the opening day of their Elephant Lemonade Cup inter-school cricket tournament fixture which began at Wijerama Mawatha yesterday.

Sri Rahula College opener, left-hander Chinthaka Ratnayake made an impressive debut in school cricket when he scored a brilliant 110 inclusive of 13 fours and one six scored off 194 balls in their inter-school cricket match against Harischandra Maha Vidyalaya, Negombo, which ended in a draw at Katugastota.

It was Chinthaka Ratnayake's maiden appearance in a school cricket match and he was associated in an opening stand of 110 with Upul Saman Kumara 60 (7 fours, 1 six, 96 balls), Senarath Bandara also capped his good bowling performance of 5 for 63 on the first day by scoring a quick 73 in 40 balls with 4 sixes and 9 fours.

The spinners and fast bowlers clinic for cricketers in the Central Province conducted by the National Development Committee of the Cricket Board together with the District Cricket Association of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Kegalle will be held at Lake View grounds, Kandy today and tomorrow at 8.30 am.

Former test cricketers D. S. de Silva, Rumesh Ratnayake together with Director NDC Malcolm Perera, Regional coach Sunil Fernando and Oshadie Weerasinghe will conduct the clinic at which over 200 cricketers above the age of 15 are expected to participate.

A brilliant 100 with 16 fours by 14 year old Nipuna Ratnayake for St. Anthony's College 'A' was the highlight of their inter-school cricket match against Vidyartha College 'A' which ended in a draw at Katugastota.

The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka has donated cricket equipment to the value of Rs. 35,000 to the All Saints College, Galle. Apart from this the BCCSL had earlier donated a concrete wicket for the use of the College students which was inaugurated by the Cricket Board president Thilanga Sumathipala in association with Sri Lankan test players Muthiah Muralitharan and Roshan Mahanama recently.

Mr. Nuski Mohamed, the Treasurer of the BCCSL has intervened in getting the donation at the request of All Saints old boy M. S. M. Hussain. The cricket equipment was handed over to the principal H. Wijesinghe at a simple ceremony held at the College on February 1.
