Sri Lanka got off to a confident start, making better use of a slow pitch than Pakistan. Atapattu scored 80 in 114 balls, the nucleus of a total of 239. But Pakistan struggled throughout against the spinners, especially Jayasuriya, who took four for 49, three of them coming from excellent outfield catches by Kalpage.
