The SuperSport series final will be discontinued after Cricket South Africa decided that it didn't make financial sense. "The final wasn't a success and didn't work and that's why a decision was taken not to continue," Gerald Majola, the chief executive of Cricket South Africa, told News24. "The team that finish top of the log will be the champion."
The decision was probably prompted by the last two finals, both of which were tame draws. According to the current rules of the competition, the teams share the trophy in the event of a draw. In the 2005-06 final, the Titans and Dolphins played out a dull draw, with neither side keen to force the issue.
Majola said that the new system will offer the teams more financial incentives as well. "Financially there will be a lot to play for. The only team not to benefit financially will be the side at the bottom of the log. Teams from first to fifth on the log will get financial rewards and this means that every match in the series will be important."
Majola also confirmed that as top finishers of the previous season, the Dolphins will travel to India at the start of the new season to play in the Duleep Trophy, India's zonal first-class competition. The domestic season in South Africa begins as soon as the Dolphins return from their month-long tour of India.
Majola also revealed that an ICC delegation would visit South Africa on June 10 to discuss next year's Twenty20 international tournament that the country has agreed to host.
