Sussex face follow on after afternoon collapse

Sussex are in danger of having to follow on after they lost five wickets for 70 in the final session against Warwickshire at Hove.

As a sea mist rolled over the ground, Sussex's batsmen completely lost their way, closing on 151-6 in reply to Warwickshire's 395, still 95 runs of avoiding the follow on.

The wickets were shared around, but Warwickshire's most impressive performer was former Durham seamer Mel Betts who took two wickets in successive overs during a hostile spell down the slope.

Betts pinned Bas Zuiderent lbw on the back foot before claiming the key wicket of skipper Chris Adams whose first Championship innings for over a month ended when he was surprised by Betts' extra bounce and edged to the wicketkeeper.

Sussex's reply had begun badly with Murray Goodwin caught behind off the third ball when he got a bottom edge to an ambitious pull off former Sussex paceman Vasbert Drakes.

Richard Montgomerie and Michael Yardy repaired the damage in a second wicket stand of 80, but Montgomerie's dismissal for 36 sparked a disappointing Sussex collapse.

Yardy, who resisted for over three hours, was bowled shouldering arms at Neil Carter for 39 to give the wayward South African his first Championship wicket while Mark Wagh's gentle off-spinner accounted for Umer Rashid when he carved recklessly outside off stump and was caught at backward point.

Earlier Wagh had made 90 with 19 fours in Warwickshire's 395 while Brown also made his best score of the season, hitting 63 before the visitors lost their last four wickets for 12 runs.
