The second edition of Zimbabwe Cricket's Tertiary Institutions Cricket week took place last week. The tournament was played in Harare and for the first time the event included women's sides. Six men's and four women's teams took part in the three-day event.
Last year's winning University, Africa University, this year had four sides in the tournament other colleges who took part were Mutare Polytechnic, Bulawayo Polytechnic, Mutare Teachers' College and Marymount Teachers' College. Strangely, the biggest cricket-playing province in the country, Harare Metropolitan, was only represented by the University of Zimbabwe in the men's section and Belvedere Teachers College in the women's.
Teams were split into two pools and matches were played at Takashinga Cricket Club and Churchill High School. Sunday's men final saw University of Zimbabwe (UZ) and Bulawayo Polytechnic taking on each other, Polytechnic making a paltry 47 all out, UZ made light work of the small target winning by 9 wickets.
UZ's Captain and Southerns Logan Cup opening batsman, Jemton Chinyengetere, was named the player of the tournament. In the women's final, Marymount Teachers College beat Chinhoyi University of Technology by six wickets to clinch the inaugural women's trophy.
The tertiary institutions cricket programme is part of Zimbabwe Cricket's development thrust to cater for those who want to continue playing the game after leaving high school and to bridge the gap between school leavers and competitive club cricket.
