Perth-Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh warned his players not to
underestimate the fighting qualities of West Indies on the eve of the second
Test starting today (last night Caribbean time).
Waugh's team won last week's first Test of the five-match series in Brisbane by
an innings and 126 runs and are clear favourites to win in Perth.
Australia are seeking a world record 12th consecutive Test victory but Waugh is
expecting a far more committed West Indies side when the match begins on the
notoriously fast WACA pitch.
Australia have never beaten West Indies at the WACA and Waugh believes the
bouncy pitch will again suit the touring side's quick bowlers.
"They will probably consider this their best chance of winning with the wicket
the way it is, so it will be an important Test match," he said.
"I've learned over the years that one Test doesn't make a whole summer, but if
we do win as convincingly as we did in the first Test, then I would suggest they
would struggle from there.
"They caught us off guard in Jamaica," Waugh said. "We probably thought the game
was over after the first Test match, then Lara and Jimmy Adams produced that
great partnership."
