Who have been the hardest hitters - EVER?
By Atul Kahate
The devastating innings by Chris Cairns the other day in the last Bank
of New Zealand Series match prompted this query: Who have been the
hardest hitters in Limited Overs International Cricket to date? Of
course, one way to determine this is the Number of runs scored per 100
balls (Strike Rate). But there have been no statistics of the number
of boundaries (sixes/fours) hit by batsmen in their entire
career. This is really an intersting question to which the following
tables provide an answer. However, it must be noted that out of the
1388 LOI matches played so far (as on 20 January 1999), there are some
early matches for which the details such as fours and sixes hit and
balls faced cannot be traced.
Sachin Tendulkar tops the list of fours (774), whereas Viv Richards
(121) is the only batsman to hit over 100 sixes, although Sanath
Jayasuriya needs just one more to reach the three-figure
mark. Tendulkar himself is not far behind (96).
Perhaps it would be noteworthy that out of the 7800 runs scored by
Sachin Tendulkar so far, 39.69% have come from boundaris alone! (774
fours = 3096 runs and 96 sixes = 576 runs, total 3672 in boundaries).
