After West Indies' spirit-lifting victory in the final of the Champions Trophy on Saturday, the staff of the West Indies Cricket Board today did their bit for victims of Hurricane Ivan. They sent off donations including food, water, clothing and household articles to Grenada in aid of the hurricane-relief effort.
Ivan, which also damaged homes in Barbados, St Lucia, and St Vincent, struck Grenada earlier this month, causing a catastrophic devastation of property and a number of casualties among the island's 90,000 residents. It was the fourth major hurricane of the season, and was preceded by Hurricane Frances, which killed at least two people in the Bahamas and 14 in the American states of Florida and Georgia.
Roger Brathwaite, the WICB's chief executive officer, said many of the board's staff came from islands which have suffered loss of life and property because of the hurricanes, so they empathised deeply with the people of Grenada.
