South Africa v New Zealand, 2012-13

Wisden's review of the second Twenty20, South Africa v New Zealand, 2012-13

Neil Manthorp
15-Apr-2013
At East London, December 23, 2012 (floodlit). New Zealand won by eight wickets (D/L). Toss: New Zealand. Twenty20 international debut: A. M. Phangiso.
The oft-quoted line that a single player can win a game of Twenty20 has seldom been better illustrated. Guptill scored an inspired hundred, the third by a New Zealander in Twenty20 internationals, when - with four needed off the last ball - he smeared Kleinveldt's attempted yorker to the cover boundary. It provided Brendon McCullum, owner of the other two centuries, with his first win as New Zealand's full-time captain. Henry Davids and du Plessis had played smartly before Miller added some zip, but three wickets for Bracewell in the final over cost South Africa dearly. The match was reduced to 19 overs a side after a floodlight failure during the first innings, increasing New Zealand's target by three to 169 - more than any team had chased down against South Africa. But Guptill, returning from a stomach bug, played an innings to remember: orthodox in his shots down the ground, relentlessly powerful and perfectly paced.
Man of the Match: M. J. Guptill.
