Mumbai pick Suryakumar and Dube for Ranji quarter-final against Haryana

Neither has been a regular in the first-class circuit but have been included by the defending champions for the knockout contest

Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube have returned to Mumbai's 18-man Ranji Trophy squad after long gaps for their quarter-final fixture against Haryana, to be played from February 8 to 12 in Lahli.
Suryakumar, India's T20I captain who led the team to a 4-1 series win over England recently, played against Maharashtra earlier in the season, one of only two first-class games he has played since the final of the 2023 Duleep Trophy in July 2023. Dube has also stayed away from the format in recent times. He played the game against Jammu & Kashmir in late January - the same one that featured Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order - but that was his only Ranji game of the season.
Both Suryakumar and Dube were in action against England in the five-match T20I series, but while Dube had a good time of it in the two matches he played - 53 in 34 balls in the fourth T20I and 30 in 13 to go with 2 for 11 with the ball in the fifth - Suryakumar was off the boil, totalling 28 runs in five innings with two ducks.

Shami to be rested for Bengal's opening Vijay Hazare Trophy game

He will sit out of the match against Delhi on December 21 in Hyderabad

India pacer Mohammed Shami will be rested for Bengal's opening Vijay Hazare Trophy fixture against Delhi.
Shami, looking to showcase full fitness with one eye on a potential return to the India Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, was originally named in Bengal's 20-member squad for the List-A tournament. But now he will sit out of the match in Hyderabad on December 21.
On Wednesday, though, India Test captain Rohit Sharma had said in Brisbane that Shami was being troubled by swelling in his knee. He had also said that Shami would not be considered unless he is "200% fit" and that updates on his fitness should ideally come from the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

The seamer has been trying to regain fitness for the ongoing Test series in Australia

Shami, who last played for India at the 2023 ODI World Cup, had an ankle surgery this February. He returned to action with the Ranji Trophy in November and took seven wickets in the match against Madhya Pradesh.

His brother Krunal will lead the Baroda side who open their campaign against Gujarat on November 23

Hardik Pandya will feature in the Krunal Pandya-led Baroda squad for the 20-over Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which begins on November 23. Both the Pandya brothers will be in action, a day before the IPL mega auction kicks off in Jeddah.
Under Krunal, Baroda had made the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final, where they lost to Punjab in Mohali. Hardik's return to domestic cricket is a significant boost for the side. Last month, Hardik was retained by Mumbai Indians and will remain their captain. Meanwhile, Krunal was released by Lucknow Super Giants and will be part of the auction.

Wait for Shami's comeback continues

Shami has been recovering from an ankle injury

Mohammed Shami remains out of action even as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury that has sidelined him since November last year.
Speaking at an event last month, Shami had said that he had started bowling at his "100%" and that the "results are good". He didn't find a place in Bengal's squad for the next two rounds of the Ranji Trophy, where they take on Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.
Anustup Majumdar, the veteran batter, will continue to lead the side with Abhimanyu Easwaran away in Australia turning out for India A against Australia A. Abhimanyu's state mates Abishek Porel and Mukesh Kumar are also part of that tour, while Akash Deep, who hasn't been part of the Ranji Trophy yet as he has been a part of the India Test side, isn't included either.

Samson set to miss the third round of the Ranji Trophy

The Kerala batter wants to undergo treatment for a mucus cyst on his lower lip

Kerala's Sanju Samson wants to undergo treatment for a mucus cyst on his lower lip, which will rule him out of the third round of the Ranji Trophy season which begins this Saturday. He has opted for the procedure so he can be fully ready for India's T20I tour of South Africa in November, having recently received the backing of the team management to be their new opening batter.
Samson repaid that faith in the last T20I that he played, two weeks ago against Bangladesh, scoring a century that served as the foundation of a total of 297 for 6. Immediately after that performance, he made himself available to play the second round of the Ranji Trophy for Kerala, but that four-day game, in Alur against Karnataka, was rained out with only fifty overs of the first innings possible. Samson was at the crease unbeaten on 15 off 13 balls with two fours and a six to his name when play was called off on the second day never to resume.
Kerala, who are in second place on the Group C table with a win and a draw, will play Bengal from October 26 to 29 in Kolkata. Samson will not be with them, a KCA official confirmed on Thursday, and they may have to make do without him in the longer term as well because if he is picked for the T20Is in South Africa, which begin on November 8 and end on November 13, he will be unavailable for their matches against Uttar Pradesh (November 6-9) and Haryana (November 13-16).

BCCI rejects CAB's request to defer domestic games because of cyclone threat in Bengal

The state association had written to BCCI secretary Jay Shah

The BCCI has rejected Cricket Association of Bengal's (CAB) request to defer two of its home matches because of the looming threat of Cyclone Dana. The CAB had asked to defer one game each of the Ranji Trophy and the Under-23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy, to be held in Kolkata and Kalyani respectively, by a couple of days.
The senior Bengal side is scheduled to take on Kerala at the Jadavpur University Campus 2nd Ground in Kolkata as the third round of the Ranji Trophy begins on Saturday, with the cyclone expected to make landfall and be at its most intense in Odisha and Bengal on Thursday and Friday.
The BCCI has scheduled a slightly longer gap between matches for this season, which may have given hope to the CAB of the request getting approved. Once the Bengal versus Kerala clash finishes on October 29, they will have almost a week before their next match, starting on November 6 in Bengaluru against Karnataka. The same will apply for Kerala who will travel back home, to Thumba, for their fourth-round fixture to host Uttar Pradesh from November 6.
