Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Guyana Amazon Warriors suffered their first defeat of CPL 2016 when they were strangled by the Trinbago Knight Riders spinners while chasing 152 at the Providence Stadium. Although Amazon Warriors' required run rate had shot up from nine to 14 in the second half of the innings, they needed 14 from the final over but fell short by seven runs.
Put in to bat, Knight Riders were led by opener Hashim Amla's 64 off 54, his third half-century of the tournament, but he didn't get much support from the top order. Anton Devcich holed out to deep midwicket for a 13-ball 7 and Colin Munro handed a return catch to Veerasammy Permaul, who caught the ball after juggling twice. Amla had trudged along to 42 by then and crossed the 50-run mark in the 14th over but was bowled in the 18th over when he missed a slog sweep against Adam Zampa. Three sixes from Dwayne Bravo and two fours from Denesh Ramdin helped them collect 39 runs in the last three overs to cross 150.
Bravo opened with Devcich and it reaped benefits when the left-arm spinner removed Dwayne Smith for a duck with his third ball. Amazon Warriors were scoring at less than a run a ball and their Powerplay progress was dented further when Devcich accounted for Chris Lynn in the fifth over. Martin Guptill played a patient innings, but a lack of substantial partnerships added more pressure as the end overs approached.
Amazon Warriors needed 64 runs from five overs and sixes from Guptill, Christopher Barnwell and Rayad Emrit brought it to 30 from 12 balls. Even though Guptill fell for a 40-ball 50 on the first ball of the 19th over, two fours and a six from Permaul, in the same over, gave Amazon Warriors a chance in the final over but Kevon Cooper conceded only six runs to register Knight Riders' second win. Devcich and Sunil Narine both bowled economical spells and picked up two wickets apiece. Knight Riders are now placed third while Amazon Warriors still lead the table.
