Samuels wins it for West Indies! Short and wide outside off stump, not a very good ball and Samuels slashes hard at it, the ball flies wide of third man for four to finish the match
India vs West Indies, 15th Match at Ahmedabad, Oct 26 2006 - Ball by Ball Commentary
West Indies have won by three wickets and have qualified for the semi-finals. What a finish it was! They were cruising when Sarwan and Morton were batting, then slowed down inexplicably when they had plenty of wickets in hand with not many runs to get. Morton's wicket began another collapse and they limped over the finish line with two balls to spare.
For India it was a question of ifs. What if they had played Powar? What if they had scored a few more runs? What if their fast bowlers had bowled tighter at the start? What if Marlon Samuels's final swipe had gone anywhere but the boundary? Frankly they were lucky that the finish was so close. India now play Australia in what is a winner-goes-through loser-goes-home contest on October 29. This West Indian victory has also eliminated any mathematical chance of England making the semi-finals. West Indies have booked one semi-final berth from this group and India and Australia will slug it out for the other.
Man of the Match: Shivnarine Chanderpaul wins it for his diligent innings that provided West Indies with the ideal start to the chase. His 51 spanned two crucial partnerships of 43 and 57 for the first two wickets and severely hampered India's chances of defending 223.
It's been fun bringing you today's action from Ahmedabad. South Africa take on Pakistan tomorrow in what is a knock-out match. We'll be live at 2pm India time for that game. Do tune in. Cheers!
dabbed short on the off side for one, Agarkar shies at the bowler's end but misses or that would have been out
slips down leg side, umpire Harper says that's not wide, close call but it was close to leg stump
Five needed off five balls, a boundary will swing it West Indies way but India have all the momentum. Who will hold their nerve?
bowled him, Smith tries to heave it down the ground and misses completely, the ball crashes into the stumps, unbelieveable stuff
Five runs needed off the last over, Sarwan is out, thats a plus for India. How on earth did it come to this. If India win, they would have got out of jail. Dwayne Smith is the new batsman. Agarkar will bowl the final over.
slower ball, Samuels skies the pull shot, Dravid drops the catch at midwicket but he throws the ball to the nonstriker's end and Sarwan who was trying to complete the second run is well short, it's all going a bit crazy out there
dabbed to Yuvraj at point
Surely West Indies can't lose from here, they need just six off eight balls with five wickets in hand. Sarwan is batting on a half-century. They've done stranger things in the past. Samuels is the new batsman.
he's chopped it on! Lara backed away to make room and had a wild swing at it, he gets a bottom edge on to leg stump
gorgeous cover drive, that was short and wide outside off stump, Lara flays it through the off side as if to say that's how it's done
short of a length and that was quick, the ball squeezed through Lara's bat and pad, clips the thigh pad and goes through to Dhoni
driven back to Pathan
If anybody is wondering why Munaf isn't bowling it's because he is off the field.
played to midwicket for a single, Lara is off and West Indies need ten more
Agarkar sprays it so wide outside off that had Dhoni let it go, Dravid at first slip would have collected it
Brian Lara comes into bat, bad back and all
This could be a blessing in disguise for West Indies. Taking nothing away from the value Morton's innings, he was making heavy weather of the chase.
and Morton is out lbw, he tried to pull a ball that pitched short but kept far too low, he missed and was hit plumb in front of middle stump
short ball, Sarwan gives him the charge and makes room to smack it through cover for one
attempted short ball but mis-directed down leg side
driven hard but back to the bowler
attempted yorker but it isn't quite in the blockhole, driven to long-on
flicked down to long leg
West Indies need 17 off three overs now.
dabbed to midwicket for a sharp single
poor ball, short and no pace on it at all, it sat up and said 'hit me' and Morton obliged by smacking it to the midwicket fence, he hit that so hard that he cracked his bat
