As it happened: Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, IPL 2022, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

By Sidharth Monga

Sunrisers stay alive

It ends with a massive six, but Sunrisers Hyderabad have broken their five-match losing streak with a three-run win. They stay alive, just, in the tournament. Bhuvneshwar Kumar's excellent over is followed up by Fazalhaq Farooqi closing it out with his variations. Eighteen defended in the last two overs.
We leave you with a teaser from our report. Thanks for joining us.
"Sunrisers Hyderabad kept their campaign alive with a xx-run over Mumbai Indians in a rollercoaster finish but only just. Now joint-sixth with 12 points from 13 matches, they were left needing a win in their last game and a number of other results to go their way. Mumbai were now the favourites to finish bottom of the table , two points behind Chennai Super Kings with a match each to go.
On a five-match losing streak, SRH finally dropped Kane Williamson down the order, which brought immediate dividends with Priyam Garg, his replacement, and Rahul Tripathi bossing the first 16 overs with help from Nicholas Pooran. Despite the sensational pace of Umran Malik, Mumbai’s inexperienced batting line-up stayed alive till the end of the 18th over, which went for four sixes from Tim David. With 19 required off 13, though, David ran himself out and Bhuvneshwar Kumar closed it out with a wicket-maiden in the 19th."

Bhuvneshwar. Yorker king

W
T Natarajan might have missed his yorkers, but Bhuvneshwar Kumar has all but sealed the game with an over full of yorkers and one slower short ball that gets the wicket of Sanjay Yadav. It was 19 needed when the over began, and a wicket-maiden later, MI still need 19.

This is the 18th over. Bowled by T Natarajan. To Tim David. Natarajan keeps missing the yorker frequently, and David keeps depositing it into the stands, including a monster hit of 114 metres. Off the last ball of the over, though. David sets off for one while the ball has hardly deflected any distance off Natarajan. He has run himself out after bringing the equation down to 19 off 13. What a rollercoaster.
Sanjay Yadav, the non-striker, knows the run is not on and doesn't set off immediately. In the end he knows he has to sacrifice himself for David but could he have waited for David to reach the non-striker's before setting off to make sure David didn't get out? Possibly too much to think of in that moment.

No. 21 for Umran Malik

Just a measure of Umran Malik's effectiveness: with Daniel Sams taken, he has the most wickets for an Indian quick this IPL. But the real stat is this: he has now conceded more not-in-control runs than any other bowler this IPL. Out of the 420 runs he has conceded, 104 have been unintentional. When the batter has not been in control. Control percentage against Malik: not even 60%.

Pace like fire

Umran Malik keeps dragging SRH back into this one with his sheer pace. Tilak Verma, MI's find of the season, is cramped and hurried into a pull, but gets only a top edge to extra cover. Just too quick for him. And for the first time now, it is more than two a ball required: 71 off 35. Malik now has 20 wickets, the most for an Indian quick this IPL. Highest wicket-taker has 24.

Malik gets one back

Umran Malik went for 14 runs in his first over but he had both the batters on the hop. He hit Rohit Sharma flush in the helmet, and hit Ishan Kishan's bat even before he could shape up to pull. The edge on that occasion flew for a six. Malik got a change of ends, came back with the same high pace, and had Kishan caught at long-on. Just too quick and too hard a length. It's now 101 for 2 in 11.3.

The match-up works for SRH

Washington Sundar came into this match with an unbelievable record against Rohit Sharma: 19 balls, 17 runs, two wickets. It is not a huge sample size so it is possible to just brush it aside as one of those things. But SRH have tried Washington again and again. Three times in fact in the first 11 overs, and in his third over he has Rohit caught at deep midwicket. Again this wicket has all the hallmarks of Washington's bowling: watching the batter's feet longer than many, then adjusting the length as Rohit charged at him, and he had him caught at deep midwicket. Rohit gone for his highest score this IPL but still short of a fifty. MI 97 for 1 after 11.

MI set up a base

They haven't been ultra aggressive but Mumbai Indians openers have taken 51 runs off the powerplay. While Rohit Sharma has looked like he has been more intentful, Ishan Kishan has the higher strike rate with 22 off 14. Rohit is 27 off 22. MI 27% favourites to win.

MI pull things back

Just two boundaries in the last four overs as SRH keep losing wickets whenever they try the big hit. Since Tripathi got out, only one boundary came with Williamson ending on 8n off 7. This 193 is two short of SRH's highest total this season. Priyam Garg says yes they are 10-15 short of what they expected with that start but he says it is a good total given his side's bowling.

Two new batters

Just as they look to go a notch higher, both Nicholas Pooran and Rahul Tripathi have got out in the first two death overs. Pooran out to Meredith who is too full to get under, Tripathi to Ramandeep, who is too short and thus he gets too much under it. This has brought in Aiden Markram, and crucially, Kane Williamson for the death overs.

Tripathi keep going

There's no slowdown nor crazy risks from Rahul Tripathi as he enters the death overs at 69 off 41. He has just hit Daniel Sams for a six, four and a four. SRH are 164 for 2. We project 208, but they could get more here.

Big hits keep coming

Nicholas Pooran has only come in and taken the hitting a notch higher. He has raced away to 23 off 12, hitting sixes over long-off and square leg. Tripathi is 48 off 30. SRH are 129 for 2 in 13 overs.

Ramandeep Singh halts the runaway train

Priyam Garg and Rahul Tripathi have continued their excellent intent and execution even after the powerplay, taking SRH to 96 in the 10th over, but Garg finally falls caught and bowled to Ramandeep Singh for 42 off 26. That is their highest 10-over score this IPL.

Big powerplay for SRH

Two batters with positive intent and dispensable wickets have made a big difference to SRH's powerplay here. Rahul Tripathi is 24 off 13, and Priyam Garg 20 off 13. That takes them to 57 for 1 in six overs.

That's Rahul Tripathi getting stuck into Jasprit Bumrah's first over. His head to head against Bumrah in all T20 cricket now is 22 balls, 42 runs, one dismissal. SRH 46 for 1 in five overs.

And now Abhishek fails

Daniel Sams's comeback to the Mumbai Indians side continues to be impressive as he picks up Abhishek Sharma in the third over. It's another slow start for SRH with the new ball doing a little bit. Abhishek tries to break free with a hit down the ground but Sams' length is immaculate. He gets under it too much, and lobs up a catch. Eleven wickets for Sams in seven matches since his comeback. SRH 18 for 1 in 2.4 overs.

Williamson gives up opening slot

Rohit Sharma has won the toss, and despite the changing trend of runs on board working, Mumbai Indians will chase tonight. It is a big belief among T20 teams that when chasing you are never out of a game, and dew is always a factor. Two changes for Mumbai Indians. Mayank Markande and Sanjay Yadav are two spinners coming in for the incumbent spinners.
Sunrisers Hyderabad would have batted first anyway. And Williamson is finally relinquishing the opening slot. Priyam Garg will open the batting with Abhishek Sharma. Shashank Singh sits out. Also Fazalhaq Farooqi comes in for Marco Jansen. Tactical changes, Williamson calls them.
Mumbai Indians 1 Ishan Kishan (wk), 2 Rohit Sharma (capt.), 3 Tilak Varma, 4 Tristan Stubbs, 5 Tim David, 6 Daniel Sams, 7 Sanjay Yadav, 8 Ramandeep Singh, 9 Jasprit Bumrah, 10 Riley Meredith, 11 Mayank markande
Sunrisers Hyderabad 1 Abhishek Sharma, 2 Priyam Garg, 3 Kane Williamson (capt.), 4 Rahul Tripathi, 5 Aiden Markram, 6 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Fazalhaq Farooqi, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Umran Malik, 11 T Natarajan

SRH look to stay alive

Match 65 of IPL 2022. It is Sunrisers Hyderabad's chance to stay alive in this tournament. Barely just but still. Mumbai Indians on the other hand have lost even Suryakumar Yadav. SRH have lost five matches in a row. They desperately need to break that streak against the lowest-placed side this IPL. Pressure on Kane Williamson and Rohit Sharma both after underwhelming season.
