there it is. Yorker zips past Karthik outside off and Kings XI have finally defended a total this season
Kings XI vs Guj Lions, 26th match at Rajkot, Apr 23 2017 - Ball by Ball Commentary
That's all we have for you from this game. Thanks for joining in. See you later.
"Very good toss to lose. Wicket got a bit slower and our bowlers bowled really well. Got some wickets in the Poweplay and we were clinical," Glenn Maxwell says after Kings XI have successfully defended their first total this season, "Amla and Marsh are outstanding. Classical batsmen, and for them to get as deep as they did, it allowed the hitters to play their game. Making handy contributions most games, but I would like to make a bit more to make it easier on the lower order. I can't say enough about Cariappa, he bowled the right lengths, him and Axar Patel did a great holding job and kept the run-rate up for them. We have a great group of guys who are easily motivated. The guys have celebrated Hashim and Manan's outstanding innings the other day. I'm uncertain of Hashim's fitness issues, he was pretty sore when I was out there batting with him. Anytime you lose a run of games in a row, you desperately need to turn it around. For us to win this game, after losing the game, on a good wicket, I'm pleased about the character they showed."
Hashim Amla is the Man of the Match for his second fifty-plus score in two matches. He isn't at the presentation.
7.30 pm The toss didn't go Kings XI's way. The middle overs didn't go their way either. But an Amla fifty at the top and Axar's brilliance towards the end of their batting innings gave them a good total to bowl at. But their bowling has been iffy all season and 189 didn't seem impossible for Gujarat Lions. Axar took those odds on again, dismissing Suresh Raina when he was going strong, and then nipped Dwayne Smith out in the death. KC Cariappa was also very good with his offspinners and carrom balls. Finished with 2 for 24. On the back of all that, Kings XI have moved into the top four.
Good innings from Dinesh Karthik though. He picked the right shots to play up against a bowling attack executing their plans to bowl wide yorkers very well. But he just doesn't have a power-hitter's game and that ended up hurting him. "You can't chase 190 every time. Bowlers have to do something. We haven't won any 4 pm games. It's a learning curve for us. Spinners have to step up," Suresh Raina says, "Nathu got cramps, so I had to bowl Smith in the second last over. The bowlers are lacking confidence. They are not executing on match day, they do well in the nets, but not on match day. We thought we could still chase it down, but while we were batting, the wicket got slower and Sandeep and Mohit bowled good slower balls and made it hard for us to hit. At this stage, I can't say anything. We have to go there. Couple of injury issues, but we have to win more games, we can't just talk in training. We'll go to Bangalore, regroup and hopefully we can win"
yorker just outside off. All that can be done to that is a chop towards cover
slower short ball down leg, Karthik pulls to long leg
full and just outside off, Thampi swings it over to deep midwicket
short delivery on off stump, Thampi walks down to it and pulls between deep square leg and deep midwicket. Miller, the substitute, racing to his right, puts in the dive and saves a boundary.
inside edge to the fine leg boundary. This is a yorker, reversing into Thampi. He goes for a whip through midwicket and gets lucky
Thirty six needed off the last over
finishes the over with his top pace and its a dot too. Karthik tries a late cut but is beaten
another slower ball, back of the hand, to the tail-ender. Good plan. Thampi slogs across the line, and misses wildly. Karthik pinches a bye
offcutter, pitches short, and into the body. Karthik misses out on the pull. Under pressure, he doesn't hold his shape for long enough
full, slow, and wide outside off, Karthik waits on it and slams it between the sweeper and long-off. That's about the best a batsman can do to balls like these, and hope his timing is good. This time, it isn't
back of the hand slower ball again, and though Karthik does pick it, under pressure to score big, he is beaten. Goes for the slog over wide long-on, against the turn of the ball, because he has to
goes full, on fifth stump, Karthik drives it back where it came from
that's harsh. Karthik moves right across off stump, his back leg is right over the wide line as he leaves the ball. The back of a length slower ball. And umpire Erasmus calls it a wide. That's just unfair
Lions need 41 off 12...
full and wide outside off, Thampi tries to pierce the gap at cover, but misses. Good tactics. Tailenders can't hit the cover drives as well as they can muscle slogs
this becomes a full toss as it passes the wide line outside off. Thampi leaves and collects the extra
full and outside off, Karthik, now batting outside off stump because the line of attack is wide, launches it over to deep cover
hits the yorker outside off, Thampi gets an outside edge, Saha dives to his right but isn't able to hold on
looks for the full, wide yorker, as his field asks him to. DK preemts that too, moving across outside off. But it is just too wide for him to do much about. Reaches out for it and clonks to cover
Mohit now has a word with Maxi about the field. Square leg comes up. Long-on, long-off goes back. Point is back on the boundary too
full delivery on off stump, Thampi slogs and gets an inside edge to deep square leg
he goes for the wide yorker, but it slithers the other side of the wide line. Thampi is again, backing to leg and is left swinging wildly
