that will be that! NZ win by six wickets! Dug into the track again, and this time, Nicholls is up to the task! He rocks back and pounds it past deep square leg to seal the deal and secure a 2-0 series victory!
New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, 3rd ODI at Hamilton, NZ v SL, Mar 31 2023 - Match Result
New Zealand won by 6 wickets (with 103 balls remaining)
8:15pm Right. That will be that from us for this game. Hope you enjoyed our coverage as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. Until next time, this is me (Shashwat) signing off on behalf of Abhimanyu, Sudeep and everyone else at ESPNcricinfo! Goodbye and take care!
8:11pm Well, that turned into a fairly one-sided contest in the end. That, though, was not the case at the start of the run-chase when Kumara was running through the Kiwi top order. Rajitha and Shanaka picked up a wicket apiece and when Latham fell, New Zealand still needed 99 runs.
But like he has done in his short ODI career so far, Young stood up, soaked in the pressure and stitched together an excellent knock. Nicholls provided him good support, with the pair ultimately putting on a century stand.
Earlier in the day, New Zealand's bowlers were brilliant, with Henry, Shipley and Mitchell picking up three-wicket hauls. Sri Lanka, much like the rest of the tour so far, were not able to withstand that pressure and crumbled to a score that was well below par.
There were a few positives for Sri Lanka, namely the way their pacers bowled with the new ball. Kumara, though, limped off in the dying embers and Sri Lanka would be hoping that that is nothing serious. With the T20I series on the horizon, there is something for Sri Lanka to cling on to, although they would need a drastic improvement in the batting department to pose a stiff challenge.
full delivery on leg stump. Young uses the pace and glances it down to fine leg for a single
back of a length delivery outside off stump. Young goes fiddling at it away from his body and is lucky to not nick it through to Mendis
banged into the track on off stump. Young thinks about the pull initially before swaying out of the way
length delivery on middle and off stump. Young presses half forward and blocks it back to the bowler
Karunaratne to bowl what could be the final over in this game
Right. Sri Lanka have managed to stretch this run-chase to another over. Surely the Kiwis will seal the deal in this over? It would be fitting if Young was to hit the winning runs, considering how superbly he has batted today
length delivery just outside off stump. Nicholls gets a half stride forward and presents the full face of the bat
short and wide outside off stump. Left alone by Nicholls but not called a wide this time
full delivery outside off stump. Nicholls comes half forward and pokes it back to the bowler
Just four runs needed now. Can Nicholls finish it off with one blow?
bumper way outside off stump that also balloons well over the batter's head. Called a wide by the umpire
disdainful! Full delivery just outside off stump. Nicholls dances down the track and whacks it over mid on for four!
back of a length delivery outside off stump. Nicholls gets up on his toes and defends into the off side
length delivery on middle and off stump. Patted back to the bowler
Thanks Abhimanyu, not a lot of hope for Sri Lanka now. The only intrigue is around when New Zealand will get the job done. Will it be this over?
Time to welcome Shashwat back!
Nicholls gets a half-volley and drives it through cover. The fielder gets a hand on it but it bursts through. Mid-off gives chase and keeps it in. He throws it to the striker's end where it hits the stumps but Young was in safely
Banged in short on off, Nicholls pulls it square. It bounces before the boundary and some good fielding by the deep backward square fielder stops a boundary
On a length outside off, he cuts to cover
On a length outside off, he steers it out to deep third. A bit of an edge, but that stayed low and safe for Young
Mark: "Well done Young. Young will be player of the match but who will be series MVP? Young, Shipley, Henry, someone else?" My vote goes to Henry for his brilliant opening spells in both games
On a length on middle and leg, he clips it to deep midwicket's left for a single
Pitches it up outside off, Nicholls shoulders arms
Chamika Karunaratne comes back into the attack
Back of a length outside off, Young shoulders arms
Full outside off, he drives gently through cover and picks up two
Don't know what exactly has happened, but Kumara goes off the attack and off the pitch
