slower ball, top-edged to point - Originals win by 10 runs! Sams throws his head back as he mistimes one last desperate heave into the night sky. Walter gets the job done, and Originals move into the top three after victory over the champions
Originals vs Rockets, 23rd Match at Nottingham, Men's Hundred, Aug 17 2023 - Ball by Ball Commentary
9.20pm: Back-to-back wins for Manchester Originals batting first, this one set up by Phil Salt's heart-attack inducing 86 off 32. Rockets wanted to chase, but probably not that many - and although Tom Kohler-Cadmore's fifty kept them in the hunt, wickets for Josh Tongue and Paul Walter pegged them back at the death to seal the result
Phil Salt is the Match Hero: "It was a good wicket, both sides played well, came down to who held their nerve at the end. At the halfway stage you always knows what the oppo has done well. Areas where we could have done better with bat and ball. A lot of top-order batters have struggled, so nice to get a few. Tournament play is about peaking at the right time. Every side wants to be hitting their stride at this point. [Last year's run to final] Almost identical, but this year we've got Jos. Hopefully keep going and find ourselves in the play-offs."
That's us done. Trent Bridge saw a record crowd of 15,500 tonight, but the home side leave disappointed, their chances of qualification in the balance with two games left. We'll be back for more tomorrow, as the Hundred rumbles on. Cheerio!
full and fast outside off, another swing and a miss! Originals celebrate the dot, this one is almost bagged and tagged for the visitors
slower ball into the pitch, Hain moves into line and tries to haul it over fine leg but can't time his shot and sends it on the bounce to the fielder for another single
tucks him up with a pace-on delivery into the body, 83mph and he can't connect with a heave to leg. They settle for the leg bye in the end
Gets the hitter on strike, 13 off four
round the wicket, pace off outside off and Hain walks across, pulls one to deep backward square leg
Five balls to come, Rockets need a big hit or two. Walter the man to bowl
goes back of a length outside off, 85mph and Sams plinks his cut into the covers for one
Fifteen off six now. Sams pulls out as Zaman runs in... and now Originals have missed the cut-off, so will have to bring an extra man inside the ring! Lots of discussion over Zaman's final ball
meatball full toss, gets munched! Sams knows his route to the ropes and slugs a baseball line drive over deep midwicket to bring the crowd alive
pinpoint yorker on middle and off, Sams does well to deflect it leg side for a couple. But Rockets need boundaries here
goes for the wide blockhole, pace off and Hain can't get under it. One into the off side
fired full at the pads, deflected for a leg bye
The pendulum swings back towards Originals. Zaman for the penultimate set, Sam Hain walks out to join Sams
Tongue licks another! Slower ball, mistimed straight up... Rockets lose both set batters in the set! Full and wide and he went hard at it looking for a boundary, but only succeeded in getting a big top edge to point, where Hartley holds on
backs away and thick-edged towards short fine leg
full at the stumps, deflected leg side off the pads and into the gap at midwicket for a couple
In comes Daniel Sams
full and beaten down the leg side as he stepped away... given out by Martin Saggers, but Munro reviews. He looks bemused by the decision but UltraEdge soon proves that it was an excellent one! Just a tickle as he helicoptered across the line, Buttler appealed immediately and Munro has to go
sprayed full and well wide on the off side
back of a length and smashed into the crowd! Munro picks the slowie and hammers a rising cut over the short Bridgeford Road boundary!
Tongue now, 35 off 15
in the slot at 81mph, Munro hoicks it out towards cow corner, didn't quite get hold of it and Holden runs around from deep midwicket to keep them to two
misses his yorker, but this was pace off and TKC drags an inside edge towards short fine leg
back of a length, 87mph and Munro opens the face, again skips the ball to short third without doing too much damage
wide yorker, gets it where he wants it and short third cuts off the toe-ended swipe
full toss on off stump, 85mph and almost as good as a yorker as Munro jabs it through point
strays down the leg side first up
Zaman again, 42 needed from 20
