High Praise For Under-19 Cricketers
The Nation
The two coaches who conducted the 1998 Caribbean Home Insurance
Under-19 cricket coaching clinic are pleased with what they saw.
Former West Indies players Alvin Greenidge and Ezra Moseley have
expressed great satisfaction with the manner in which the
two-week training and work-out sessions went at Kensington Oval.
Greenidge spoke glowingly of the players, saying that there was
lots of talent in the country which just need to be nurtured.
"I was surprised at the level of talent we had," the former Test
opener said. "It proved that all is not lost and we still have
boys who can play."
This point was echoed by Sir Garfield Sobers last week when he
said there was indeed a lot of young talent around. Sobers spent
some time with the players, giving them tips and speeches.
Moseley was also pleased with the level of professionalism of
the players.
"The lads were quite keen and most of them showed what it takes
to be good players."
Cautioned
Although Greenidge was generally happy with the talent he
cautioned that if the players were not treated well they may be
lost to other elements of society.
"The boys just need guidance and exposure and they should be
cool," Greenidge said. "It's a matter of keeping them interested
in the game. If you don't do that they will find other things to
do."
He called for more matches and opportunities for the youngsters
to demonstrate their ability.
"They don't get enough work. The more playing time a player gets
the better it is for him. In the long run it can only do
Barbados' cricket well," Greenidge said.
The players did get an opportunity to showcase their talent on
Monday at Queen's Park.
