Denmark: Svanholm on top - Peter Power reports

There was plenty of excitement in this weekend's matches except for one where a new record was probably set

28-Jun-2000
There was plenty of excitement in this weekend's matches except for one where a new record was probably set. Nørrebro from Copenhagen had started the season by winning their first three matches outright, but since then have failed and now they were bowled out by reigning champions Svanholm for a meager 34 in 28 overs. Svanholm only needed 9 overs to pass.
Copenhagen based Glostrup lost to Skanderborg on Saturday by a measly single run. Glostrup had to score 11 off the last over but a six off the second last ball meant they had to get least a three off the last but John Larsen managed only a two. On the Sunday Glostrup went to North-Jutland to face bottom side Chang and after Chang were bowled out for 92 thanks to Peer Jensen's 6 for 11 one thought it was just a formality for Glostrup. But without their best batsman they fell apart and only won thanks to a last ditch swing by Peer Jensen landing just beyond the boundary thus winning by one wicket.
Challengers Herning were looking at defeat against KB, who opened by scoring 251 for 5 in wet conditions, where Herning were 5 down for 66 after 24 overs, but a heroic turn around lead by Danish captain Morten Hedegaard, who by a series of well placed drives over the top ended up on 97 not out raised the runrate to over 8 passing KB in the last over. KB were in Esbjerg on the Saturday where they again made a high score but lost.
The situation is looking like this:
Match Points
Svanholm 8 14
Skanderborg 8 12
Herning 6 10
Nørrebro 8 8
Esbjerg 7 6
KB 8 4
Glostrup 9 4
Chang 5 0
In the first division the five top teams have now been found for the promotion play-offs. Husum are still undefeated and seem certain in their present form to get promotion. Svanholm second eleven have surprised this and although they are unable to go up they will take part in the playoffs as well as Ishøj, Albertslund and the surprise side Fredericia. The other teams take part in the relegation battle where only first place are guaranteed a 1st. division place next year. Nykøbing Mors who played in the Elitedivision last year have to fight for 1st. division status with Aarhus and Køge
