Vaughan looks likely to resume as captain after recovering from a broken finger. "Michael looks like he'll play," Peter Moores, England's coach, said. "He'll have a severe fitness test. Every time he's had a bat there's been a little bit of pain, but nothing that should stop him playing."
It is expected he will replace Owais Shah, who made 6 and 4 at Lord's, in the squad but what is less certain is how he will fit into the final XI given that England are unlikely to gamble on playing only four bowlers again. With five of the other top-six batsmen scoring hundreds, it is possible that Andrew Strauss, who captained in Vaughan's absence, may miss out.
Flintoff successfully came through a match on Sunday for Lancashire but played only as a batsman, and Moores made it clear that England will not include him unless he can bowl.
Hoggard, however, looks almost certain to miss out at Leeds after limping out of the first Test with a groin strain. Moores hinted as much last night when he said that Hoggard risked longer-term damage if he tried to play again too soon.
But Steve Harmison, who for long periods at Lord's looked woefully out of sorts, received the backing of Moores in post-match interviews. "Steve's grown as the game has gone on," he said. "He put himself under pressure in this game which shows how much he wants to do it for England. He started to get back his rhythm and he will be better for having a Test under his belt and he's started to get himself to where he wants to be."
Nevertheless, England are likely to draft in James Anderson and Sajid Mahmood to give them as many options as possible at a ground that traditionally favours seamers.
England (possible) Michael Vaughan (capt), Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell, Matt Prior, Liam Plunkett, Sajid Mahmood, Steve Harmison, James Anderson, Monty Panesar.
