Fletcher calls for greater use of the third umpire

England coach Duncan Fletcher has outlined his ideas for the extended use of the third umpire to help with decisions. In light of the dismissal of Nasser Hussain, lbw to a ball he had clearly hit, Fletcher revealed how he believed the use of technology could enhance the game and help the umpires on the field.
Although he was careful not to criticise the decision, in line with the ICC's Code Of Conduct, Fletcher admitted that he wrote to the ICC two months ago suggesting that a system of "referrals" might be instigated. The idea would be that each side has three opportunities per innings to seek clarification from the third umpire to any decision.
"I've felt all along that referrals should be looked at," Fletcher conceded. "It's not a reflection on what happened today (Hussain's dismissal) and it's difficult for me because I can't really speak about the decision. People saw what happened on television and I'll have to leave it at that."
Hussain endured a scratchy start, and just as it looked as if he may be putting his wretched form behind him, Steve Bucknor upheld an lbw appeal from Saqlain. Fletcher paid tribute to the restraint with which the captain accepted the decision.
"I've not had a chance to talk to him about it yet, but you have to make sure you speak at the right times to players when you're a coach," Fletcher said. "The players must go out there and take decisions as they come about and he did it very well especially when you consider he is looking to make runs."
Although Hussain was unfortunate with his dismissal, it is worth remembering that Atherton had earlier benefited from a let-off when replays confirmed that he should have been given out caught down the leg side.
