The heavy rains in Nairobi which severly undermined Kenya's
preparations, have not dampened their enthusiasm or blunted their
determination to play to the best of their ability.
The coach, Robert is thinking and talking positive, refusing to be
drawn into discussions about their opposition. Stressing that they
will be taking one game at a time, he believes the players should
concentrate on their own game and should not be overawed by their
opponents. Their enthusiasm, skill and raw ambition will ensure that
they will be competing on level terms.
Whilst discussing the side both the coach and the manager, Edward
Odumbe, highlighted the strength of the bowling attack and their
brilliant fielding, on which they have spent so much time during the
poor weather in Kenya. If the batsmen can knuckle down and set a
competitive score both South Africa and Pakistan will face a tough
challenge.
The bowling is likely to be opened by Josephat Ababu Sorongo and the
rookie paceman, Gerald Odhiambo. Josephat is a talented medium pacer
and middle order batsmen, who despite a tendency to lose
concentration, is well suited to the humid conditions in Sri Lanka. If
he can find a good length he should be able to get significant
movement in the air and off the pitch.
His rookie partner is relatively unknown but a tremendously exciting
prospect. A smooth action allows him to generate significant pace and
swing the ball away from the bat.
To back up the medium pacers Kenya posses a trio of spinners all of
whom are capable of causing problems on the slow turning wickets in
Sri Lanka. The star of the show is expected to be the captain,
Muhammad Sheikh. An orthodox slow left-armer has already played for
the national side and is reputed to be in great form at the
moment. Collins is also an exciting prospect with his fast legspin
that is similar in style to Anil Kumble.
The batting is the major concern at the present and the middle order
of Sheikh, Josephat, Collins Omundi and Amiykumar Bhudia will have to
perform. The recently appointed opener, Maurice Ouma Amollo, also
deserves a mention as an exciting prospect with high ambitions in the
game.
What happens in the forthcoming days, one thing is certain, the flair
and enthusiasm of this bunch of players is going to provide a great
spectacle. One suspects that they will be become very popular here.
