Cambridge St Giles will be gearing themselves up for the new East Anglian
Premier League this weekend, by taking on Kent Premier League side Bromley
in a friendly game at Gonville & Caius on Saturday (17 April).
It will be the first test of their new line up, including Rob Lawson who
arrived in the country this week fresh from seeing his side Otago reach the
finals of the Shell Trophy in New Zealand earlier in the year, and paceman
Darren Cousins, who joined St Giles from Essex.
Bromley will be no push over for St Giles, with 6 Kent Board players in their
ranks and county players of the likes of Alan Wells and Ben Philips. As well
as this, they are well established within the Kent League, taking the honours
for three years in succession in the mid-90's.
This year the Kent League will be a testing ground for the new 2-day format
favoured by the ECB for Premier Leagues. Bromley's Simon Williams explained
"The new format will be played over 2 consecutive weekends (Saturdays), and
there will be 102 overs played each day on a 68/34 split." The new structure
is similar to that currently played in Australia, and will be watched with
interest by both Lords and the East Anglian Premier League.
St Giles have strong links with the Kent League. Ex-St Giles players Simon
and Torban Williams play for Bromley and Blackheath respectively. Their 1st
XI scorer and club Marketing Officer, Lesley Gunn, was with Sittingbourne side
Gore Court for five years before moving to the Cambridge team three years ago.
