Germon and Priest to miss series
Work commitments will keep former New Zealand cricket captain
Lee Germon and spinner Mark Priest out of the Southern
Conference cricket team for the Conference series which begins
on Sunday.
The Southern Conference side will play Central at Wanganui with
a one-day game on Sunday followed by a four-day match to start
on Monday.
Germon and Priest will be out for the whole series while the
Southern team also loses Otago pace bowler Robert Kennedy for
the first game because of injury.
Southern coach Warren Lees has named a 13-player squad to allow
flexibility in selection and to cover for possible injury.
squad: Darrin Murray (captain), Craig Cumming, Robert Lawson,
Chris Gaffaney, Llorne Howell, Mark Richardson, Martin Croy,
Paul Wiseman, Nathan Morland, Warren Wisneski, Shane Bond, David
Sewell, Aaron Gale.
Meanwhile, all-rounder Wayne Stead and wicketkeeper Mark Lane
have come into the Canterbury team for the Cricket Max league
game against Auckland at Lancaster Park tonight.
Convener of selectors Brian McKechnie had to make the changes
because of a knee injury to Glenn Muir and the unavailability of
Lee Germon.
Stead, who joins brother Gary in the team, has been in good club
form this season and had a fine all-round performance for a
Canterbury XI against Auckland two weeks ago. Against Auckland,
Wayne Stead scored 35 not out and then took four wickets for 35
runs with his medium-pacers.
Canterbury will be looking for its second straight success under
lights after a come-from-behind 47-run win over Max champion
Central Districts in Wanganui last Friday night. Auckland also
started with a win, beating Wellington by nine wickets.
The Canterbury team for the 7pm game is: Darrin Murray
(captain), Blair Hartland, Brad Doody, Mark Lane, Gary Stead,
Craig Cumming, Llorne Howell, Shane Bond, Warren Wisneski, Mark
Priest, Michael Owens, Wayne Stead.
