Lahore, Sept 20: A 14-member Pakistan cricket team was announced for the ICC Trophy to be held at Nairobi from Oct 3. Wicketkeeper/batsman Moin Khan has been retained as captain and Inzamam-ul-Haq as vice-captain of the team.
The team will depart for Saudi Arabia on Oct 2 to perform 'Umra' and therefrom proceed to Nairobi on Oct 4. The Pakistan team will play its quarter-final on Oct 8 against the team winners of the West Indies and Sri Lanka.
The 'babe' of the team is middle-order batsman Faisal Iqbal, who scored 64 for the winning "B" team in the practice match at the Qadhafi Stadium on Wednesday.
The experienced paceman Waqar Younis retains his place and so does his deputy in Singapore Azhar Mahmood.
The picked team does not include Shahid Afridi, Hasan Raza and Atiq-uz-Zaman.
Also dropped from the team which took part in the tournament at Singapore are paceman Kabir Khan, right-arm leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmad and off-spinner Shoaib Malik. The opener Saleem Elahi, who had been sent to Singapore as re-inforcement in place of the injured Shahid Afridi, also retains his place in the team.
The team includes experienced players and is quite balanced. Saeed Anwar, Saleem Elahi and young Imran Nazir are the three openers. The great pace-duo of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis is again pairing up for the ICC Trophy. Both will be supported well by all-rounders Abdul Razzaq and Azhar Mahmood. Saqlain Mushtaq, fresh from his exploits in England and Arshad Khan, who has been doing very well in his absence, can efficiently man the off-spin department. The responsibilities in the middle-order batting will be shouldered by Inzamam-ul-Haq, Ejaz Ahmad, Yousaf Youhana,Moin Khan, Abdul Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood Wasim Akram and Faisal Iqbal.
