The Subaru Under 13 Club Championship witnessed an exciting finish today (11 August) as unbeaten Shrewsbury CC took the title by 10 points. The Championship, organised by the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), began on Tuesday with Horsley and Send CC leading the eight finalists until losing to the eventual winners yesterday.
Horsley and Send, the Surrey club which nurtured the early talent of Surrey and England cricketers Adam and Ben Hollioake, finished second and last year's runners-up Worcester Nomads came fourth fielding 12 year old Tom Illingworth, son of Worcester and England's Richard. Devon Malcolm's old club Sheffield CC, representing Yorkshire, also made the finals.
The tournament attracted over 1600 entrants nationwide, with regional finalists representing their areas in a round-robin format at Oakham School, Rutland. Shrewsbury, representing the North West region, lifted the Ken Barrington trophy for the first time.
"We are delighted with the success of this tournament, and the depth of talent it highlights across the country at Under-13 level. Past participants include many players who progressed to County and even International careers, and it's clear the teams really enjoy the opportunity to participate in the Championship" said Frank Kemp, Manager of Cricket Operations at the ECB.
Key performances for Shrewsbury from Robert Foster, who was unbeaten in three innings, and then took 2-6 against Sheffield Utd, and 3-8 against Tynemouth were supported by three unbeaten innings from James Gale. Batsman retire at 25, with the option to return if the side is all out.
