Sri Lanka: Interesting cricket on the card at Kurunegala sixes
By A. C. de Silva
THERE SHOULD be some interesting matches when the third
Kurunegala sixes cricket tournament organised by the Kurunegala
Sports Club will be worked off today at the Welegedera Stadium,
Kurunegala.
There are eleven teams in the fray - NCC - last year's champions
Bloomfield - Runners-up of 1996, Matara Sports Club, BRC, Colts,
Kurunegala YCC, SSC, CCC, Police, Kurunegala Sports Club and
Tamil Union.
Kurunegala Sports Club president Irwin Jayawardena said that
most of the Sri lanka Test stars will be seen in action, with
Aravinda de Silva turning out for NCC, Muralitharan and also
Upul Chandana for Tamil Union, Kumara Dharmasena for Bloomfield.
Arjuna Ranatunga is out of the island and that master-blaster
Sanath Jayasuriya was due to leave for Abu Dhabi last night.
According to Irwin Jayawardena, ticket sales have been very
encouraging for there should be a good turn out of spectators.
There has been some rain in the Kurunegala area in the past few
days, but adequate arrangements have been made to get the
maximum playing time.
Commercial Bank are the main sponsors of the tournament.
Cricket Board president Upali Dharmadasa will be the chief guest
at the tournament, while former president Ana Punchihewa will be
the guest of honour.
