ROSHAN de Silva of St. Joseph's, Colombo and Chanaka Wijesinghe
of St. Sylvester's, Kandy are Observer-Bata Most Popular
Schoolboy Cricketers for 1998.
Josephian Roshan de Silva won the Most Popular Schoolboy
Cricketer of the Year All-Island Contest with 19,111 votes after
a hotly contested battle with Thomian skipper Upeka Fernando who
polled 16,702 votes. In the final week's voting, Roshan de Silva
polled a staggering 10,026 votes, while Upeka had 8,874 votes.
From the start of the contest and for the duration of 12 weeks
voting, the battle for top honours in the All-Island Contest was
between Roshan de Silva and Upeka Fernando. Most of the votes
polled during the 12 weeks of voting came for these two
outstanding cricketers. Third placed Ricardo Gunaratne of St.
Anthony's College, Katugastota polled 1,965 votes.
In the Outstation Contest, it was a battle between Chanaka
Wijesinghe of St. Sylvester's Kandy and Lalin Anthony of Maris
Stella of Negombo. Wijesinghe took top spot with 17,764 votes,
while Anthony who came second, polled 12,713 votes.
It was a contest between these two during the 12 weeks voting.
Another cricketer from St. Sylvester's T. Z. K. Hajireen came
third in the Outstation Contest with 855 votes.
In the final week's voting, Chanaka Wijesinghe received 9,912
votes, while Lalin Anthony got 7,627 votes.
