Shanaka and Lakmal rescue Thomians

Nalanda were 45 for 2 in reply to S. Thomas' 234 for 7 dec. in their
inter-school cricket encounter which began at Mount Lavinia
yesterday.
There was a forty five minutes delayed start due to overnight rain
and, Nalanda having sent the Thomians to bat first, made good their
decision by claiming four wickets for 49 runs. But a splendid 94 run
fifth wicket partnership between Shanaka Caldera and all-rounder
Lakmal Fernando enabled S. Thomas' to recover and eventually declare
at tea with their score at 234 for 7.
Caldera batted enterprisingly to make 72 with one six and seven fours
whilst Fernando was unbeaten on an aggressive 82 with four sixes and
three fours, when the declaration was effected. For Nalanda skipper
Niranjan Kumara and medium pacer Dilhan Jayasundera took two wickets
apiece. Nalanda making their reply were 45 for 2 at the close.

A fine all round performance by N. Pannilavithana helped Raddoluwa MV
trounce Gurukula MV by an innings and seven runs in their
inter-school cricket encounter worked off at Raddoluwa recently.

Cambrians draw with Josehpians

Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa drew with St. Joseph's College,
Colombo in their second eleven cricket match played at Moratuwa
recently. The visitors made 201 all out with Gayan Paulus 46, D.
Perera 45, S. Perera 40 and S. Jayakody 31. Shanuka Cooray was the
most successful bowler for the Cambrians with 3 for 31.
Cambrians were in deep trouble with 90 for 5 and at this stage
fifteen-year-old Buthsara Pieris joined Shanuka Cooray and had a
match saving sixth wicket stand of 90 runs. Pieris was unbeaten with
55 and Shanuka Cooray 53. L. Pieris and S. Gayan contributed 31 and
30 runs respectively. G. Vensender captured 4/51 for the visitors. At
the close Josephians were 215/5 with D. Merel 83 and S. D. Vansendar
50.
