Jayasuriya best disciplined cricketer at St. Joseph's
Josephian versatile sportsman Johannes Jayasuriya received the
Justice Mark Fernando award for the best disciplined Cricketer
of The Year at the term-end awards ceremony held at the College
hall recently.
Johannes Jayasuriya emerged as a brilliant all-rounder during
the concluded inter-school cricket season. As a left hand
opening batsman he scored over 850 runs including one century
and seven half centuries. His knock of 92 against S. Thomas'
College, Mount Lavinia, won him the Gilmour Jayasuriya award for
the best batsman.
Being a brilliant close-in fielder he took 25 catches and also
kept wickets in few matches including the annual Josephian
Peterite 'big match' and the limited over encounter in the
absence of the regular wicket keeper. He is also a fine leg
break googly bowler.
As a breast stroke swimmer he has won many medals and cups for
the school in the 100 metres and 200 metres events and won
College colours for swimming in 1996 and also won the Sri Lanka
national school colours in 1996. As a champion diver he won
school colours in 1995 and Sri Lanka national school colours in
1994 and represented Sri Lanka at the Asia Pacific Games held in
New Delhi in 1994 and in Sri Lanka in 1995.
He was also a member of the Josephian under-19 Water Polo team
and won the triathlon held to mark the Josephian centenary year
celebrations. He represented the Josephian junior soccer teams
in the Milo trophy and in the Colombo District tournaments and
was a member of the Josephian under-13 and under-15 hockey
teams.
Morison's 2 wins
The J. L. Morison's Sports Club recorded two wins in the
Mercantile F division cricket tournament in the matches played
recently on the MCA grounds.
J. L. Morison's beat Lake House by 6 wickets
Lake House 121 all out in 31.3 overs (S. Kariapperuma 18, S. K.
Silva 22, T. Piyasiri 18, Lalith Perera 2 for 19, Ramesh
Dunuwila 3 for 23, Athula Rajkumar 2 for 35).
J. L. Morison's 123 for 4 in 17.1 overs (Nalaka Rodrigo 17,
Achinda Sampath 30, Ramesh Dunuwila 29, Chaminda Fernando 22, S.
K. Silva 2 for 27).
J. L. Morison's beat Ceylon Tours by 8 wickets
Ceylon Tours 96 all out in 30.3 overs (Don Paul 23, Athula
Rajkumara 2 for 29, Chaminda Fernando 3 for 7).
J. L. Morison's 100 for 2 in 9.4 overs (Achinda Sampath 28,
Udaya Dahanayake 48 (4x7) (6x3), L. Wijekulasuirya 2 for 55).
Lankan CC win independence cricket in Jeddah

Lankan CC 'A' defeated Lanka Puthra CC by 29 runs to clinch the
Golden Jubilee independence six a side cricket tournament
organised by the Sri Lanka Expatriate Society in Jeddah
recently.
The winners scored 85 for 2 in five overs with Roshantha making
a fine 42 supported by Romesh (12) and Munna (15). In reply
Lanka Puthra CCC were dismissed for 56 with Mubasshar claiming
two wickets. Chamila scored 20 runs for Lanka Puthra.
In the quarterfinals Lankan CC received a walk over from Lankan
CC 'B' and they defeated Reza Investments in the semifinals.
