Rain forces final to be put off for today
Elmo Rodrigopulle reporting
NEWLANDS, CAPE TOWN, WEDNESDAY.
The Standard Bank triangular final between South Africa and
Pakistan was called off without a ball being bowled owing to
rain overnight and this morning.
The organisers have pencilled an extra day for this final to be
played and weather permitting the final will be played on
Thursday.
It was a long wait before the umpires decided to call off play.
There was the possibility of final being played on a overs
reduced basis, but the conditions did not permit.
South Africa who were firm favourites to win this one will have
to wait till tomorrow to see if they can beat the Pakistanis. On
form and with the conditions favour them, South Africa stand a
good chance.
But the Pakistanis who have not been playing as a team, have
apparently got their act together and they were hard at practice
promising a backlash.
Kalutara TC-Galle CC clash in segment 'B' final
The tournament committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in
Sri Lanka has decided to make the division one (Segment 'B') a
straight final between Kalutara Town Club and Galle Cricket
Club.
The three day final will be played from Friday (April 24) at the
NCC grounds.
The tournament committee gave a hearing to all the Segment 'B'
clubs (other than Kalutara TC and Kalutara PCC), who had
requested for a semi-final as they had been promised verbally by
the former tournament committee chairman M. Seevaratnam.
Having received written statements from the clubs requesting a
semi-final, the tournament committee finally decided that they
should go by the rule book which states that it should be a
straight final.
The presenation of awards of the Segment 'B' final will be held
along with the Segment 'A' final awards on May 3 at the SSC
grounds. - [S.T.]
