S. Thomas' - innings win over Richmond
By Richard Dwight
A FINE batting display matched by an equally good bowling performance
saw S. Thomas' pull off an early innings win against Richmond at Mt.
Lavinia yesterday.
Richmond continuing from their overnight score of 78 for 4 wickets were
up against a varied pace cum spin attack and just added a further 47
runs folding up a few minutes after lunch for 125.
S. Thomas' made 234 for 4 wickets in the first innings.
The Fernando freshers - Lakmal and Gihan shared five wickets between
them and were ably supported by left arm spinner Suranga Peiris.
Following on Richmond having to wipe off a deficit of 109 runs failed
again to impress in the face of some accurate bowling backed by fielding
that was adequate. With little or no resistance they lost wickets at
regular intervals to be 60 for 7 and finally were all out for 77.
Medium pacer Lakmal Fernando, a fresher bowled well again to claim 4 for
13 off 12 overs thus having a match bag of 7 for 15. He was supported by
the consistent left-arm spinner Suranga Peiris who took 3 for 10.
S. Thomas: 234 for 4 dec.
Richmond: o/n 78/4 contd 125 (P. Kumara 32, D. Sumathipala 14 n.o., L.
L. Fernando 3 for 2, G. Fernando 2 for 26, S. Peiris 2 for 29) and 77
(P. Kumara 21, I. Udayanga 16, O. Sumathipala 13, L. L. Fernando 4 for
