Surrey CCC Press Release
09-Mar-2000
Following last years ECB initiative to use the 1999 World Cup as a tool to introduce cricket into the National Curriculum, the Surrey Cricket Board is one of two counties to continue and expand this project. Each of 30 schools spends the day at the Foster's Oval employing the Pavilion Restaurant as its classroom. Using a cross-curricular pack the schools have lessons in English, Maths and Science with a cricketing theme. Also as part of their day the children have a tour of the ground, a workshop with the groundstaff and coaching in the Ken Barrington Centre.
Gareth Townsend, Youth Cricket Manager stated;
"By the time the project finishes at the end of March we will have had 1000 children through our doors. This project is a fundamental part of our development programme that aims to promote the playing and understanding of the game. Cricket is having to compete with many other sports. By introducing it into the curriculum, in subjects like Maths and English, it may gain greater relevance and interest to children than currently is the case."
Barclays Bank and Girdler's Livery Company have generously supported the project that runs until 13th April 2000. Each school has been invited back during the summer to come and watch Surrey play. Many of them have already accepted the invitation.
