Yorkshire batsman Michael Vaughan will miss the second Test match against Pakistan starting at Faislabad tomorrow after failing a fitness test on his injured calf.
Vaughan took no part at today's practice at the Iqbal Stadium and following an examination by physio Dean Conway was ruled out of contention and told to take a complete rest in the hope that he might recover before the third and final Test gets underway in Karachi on December 7.
The calf injury, sustained during England's match against a Governor XI at Peshawar three weeks ago, ruled Vaughan out of the first Test at Lahore and his recovery has been slow.
"He's not fit - the only thing that's improved about him over the last few days has been the standard of his football refereeing," captain Nasser Hussain said.
"He can bat and stand still, but that's about all and the physio thinks it will be about a week before he recovers which takes him right up to the next Test."
In missing this Test, the unlucky Vaughan will have sat out five Tests of the 13 England have played since he made his debut last winter against South Africa in Johannesburg.
Selectors must now deliberate on who will replace him with Andrew Flintoff, the Lancashire all-rounder who was recalled from the UK before the first Test as cover for injuries, included in England's 13 man squad.
Fast bowler Matthew Hoggard is also included after taking 17 wickets in two first class matches on tour.
"I pretty much know what the final XI will be in my own mind, but I will have a final look at the pitch in the morning before making a decision," added Hussain.
Pakistan have already released fast bowler Waqar Younis, who is suffering with a virus, and are expected to give 18-year-old leg-spinner Danish Kaneria his Test debut.
