England A began their winter tour with a comfortable win against a Malaysia CA Invitational XI at Kuala Lumpur. A promising allround performance by Graham Wagg was the highlight, as he helped his side to a 112-run victory.
Scott Newman and Ed Smith also chipped in with scores to boost the score to 213 for 8 from 46 overs. Simon Jones then took 1 for 19 from seven overs as Malaysia CA were dismissed for 101 in reply.
James Tredwell, the acting captain, chose to bat, but England lost Kadeer Ali for a single with only eight runs on the board, bowled by Vickneswaran. Kevin Pietersen joined Smith, but he was caught behind for 10, the first of five victims for Sakadivan behind the stumps.
Michael Lumb and Smith, who made 46, were both caught behind off Suppiah, and when Shukeri had Bilal Shafayat stumped for no score, England were wobbling on 123 for 5. Newman, though, hit a brisk half-century from 58 balls before the two Grahams - Napier and Wagg - put on 58 to ensure a competitive total.
Malaysia's innings never really got started. Wagg made the first breakthrough, bowling Hazrulnizah, and Suriaprakash was soon trapped lbw by Napier. Wickets fell regularly until the only partnership of note between Krishnamurti and Muniandy stopped the rot. They added 55 for the seventh wicket.
Wagg was named Man of the Match for his 38 and his remarkable figures of 3 for 4 from five overs, while Napier took 2 for 14. Jones bowled six wides after coming on first change, but also had Gopinath caught behind, while Shaftab Khalid and Tredwell polished off the tail with 12 overs to spare.
