Yuvraj Singh is set to play his first game for Yorkshire next week. He was due to arrive at Headingley today, but visa problems meant that he won't be at the club until after the weekend. If that is the case, the first game he'll play will be in the County Championship match at home to Glamorgan.
Speaking to the BBC, Geoff Cope, Yorkshire's director of cricket, said: "He'll have the chance to rest on Monday evening and Tuesday, and hopefully he'll be ready to play on Wednesday."
Yuvraj, signed by Yorkshire in place of Australia's Matthew Elliott who had to return home following a persistent knee injury, has played 73 one-day internationals for India and will become the second Indian player to represent Yorkshire after Sachin Tendulkar, who was Yorkshire's overseas star in 1992.
And with Yuvraj's signing, Yorkshire are expecting rewards off the pitch too, as his presence is bound to boost support among the large Asian population. After coming in for some criticism for not selecting a local-born Asian to play in the first team, Colin Graves, the Yorkshire chief executive, said he hoped Yuvraj could help the club mend some fences.
"We've had a tremendous response already from the Indian community" Graves said. "A lot of them have wanted to get involved and help the financial situation so we will talk with those people and try and sort something out. There is a big Asian market and the response from them in the past has been minimal - and we've got to get them coming here to Headingley and enjoying it."
