Chahal stars again as Northants seal three-day win

India spinner completes nine-wicket match haul after Currie resists with century

Northamptonshire 383 (Sales 135, Zaib 71, Keogh 49, Holland 4-53) and 137 for 1 (Procter 68*, Bartlett 54*) beat Leicestershire 203 (Budinger 56, Chahal 4-82) and 316 (Currie 120, Chahal 5-134) by nine wickets
Scott Currie's valiant maiden first-class century proved in vain despite helping to stage a remarkable Leicestershire fightback as Northamptonshire completed back-to-back first-class victories for the first time in five years to the day.
Sent in as nightwatcher, Currie kept his calm as Leicestershire lost three early wickets on the third morning of this Vitality County Championship match at Wantage Road, slumping to 92 for seven, still 88 runs behind. The arrival of Tom Scriven (48 off 66 balls) heralded a complete change of approach though as he and Currie wrestled back the initiative in an attacking partnership of 101 in 21 overs either side of lunch.

Australia 145 for 5 (Litchfield 64*, Wareham 26, Penfold 2-24) beat New Zealand 143 for 7 (Green 35, Bates 33, Graham 1-13, Sutherland 1-18) by five wickets
A stunning unbeaten half-century from Phoebe Litchfield guided Australia to victory after a serious wobble against New Zealand in Mackay, but the win was overshadowed by a bizarre head knock to Ashleigh Gardner pre-game that saw her ruled out as a precaution given her concussion history.
The toss was delayed after Gardner had collided with team-mate Georgia Wareham during a vibrant warm-up game involving throwing and catching a vortex. Both players tried to catch the vortex thrown by Sophie Molineux and clashed heads. Gardner came off second best and was withdrawn from the team although it is understood she passed her initial concussion test. Heather Graham was called in as Kim Garth (knee) and Grace Harris (calf) were ruled out of the series entirely but both are expected to be available for the T20 World Cup 2024.

Australia 317 for 3 (Head 154*, Labuschagne 77*) beat England 315 (Duckett 95, Labuschagne 3-39, Zampa 3-49) by seven wickets
It was a tale of two unconventional opening batters at Trent Bridge, both aggressive left-handers, both with a love of placing bat on ball, especially through anything remotely off-line or length. But where Ben Duckett's innings ended tamely, on 95 from 91 balls, to open the door for a spirited Australia fightback, Travis Head's powered onwards and upwards, to 154 not out from 129, and ultimately to a seven-wicket victory in the first ODI.
That converted century, Head's sixth in 66 ODIs and his second against England, was the fundamental reason why Australia overcame the odds, including a sickness bug that robbed them of a swathe of key names, not least Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc - two of the "big three" (alongside the absent Pat Cummins) without any of whose presence Australia had lost each of their last eight completed ODIs against England.
