Matthew Engel made his name writing for the Guardian for almost quarter of a century from 1972, covering a wide range of fields including politics and sport. In 1993 he became editor of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, a role he relinquished to take up a post in Washington. He returned for a second spell as editor between 2004 and 2007.
His son, Laurie, died of cancer in 2005 and Engel set up a successful charity fund in his memory, The Laurie Engel Fund, which raises money in partnership with the Teenage Cancer Trust to support patient care. The proceeds of a book he wrote, Extracts from the Red Notebooks were donated to this fund.
