Canada win despite Patandin six-for

The best individual bowling performance of the week, a six-wicket haul by seamer Muneshwar Patandin, wasn't enough for Suriname to forge an upset as Canada held off a furious charge at the start of the chase to win by 24 runs. The win moves Canada to 4-0 and guarantees them a top two finish in Indianapolis to put them in the World T20 Qualifier later this summer while Suriname remains winless at World Sports Park.

Canada won the toss and batted first, posting the largest first-innings total of the tournament with 157 for 8. Rizwan Cheema and Ruvindu Gunasekera got off to a speedy start aided by some poor Suriname fielding as Gunasekera was put down on nought and 3. Cheema dominated their 59-run opening stand, launching three sixes straight down the ground. Gunasekera was finally out for 12, top edging Giovanni Gokoel to the wicketkeeper Kemraj Hardat in the ninth over.

Cheema was out on the last ball of the 10th, driving the left-arm spin of Sauid Drepaul to cover. Nitish Kumar and Jimmy Hansra then added another 70 for the third wicket before Patandin wrecked the end of the innings, taking all six wickets in the 18th and 20th overs.

First to go was Kumar, caught on the boundary for 43 before Hansra was trapped in front three balls late for 30 to make it 141 for 4. Hamza Tariq then missed a low full toss attempting a paddle sweep to start the 19th. Saad Bin Zafar and Srimantha Wijeyratne were then out caught before Junaid Siddiqui fell on the final ball of the innings to a leaping one-handed catch at long on by Gavin Singh to give Patandin the second-best ever figures at the ICC Americas T20 tournament of 6 for 22. Only Alessandro Morris of the Cayman Islands, who took 6 for 13 two years ago against Bahamas, has done better at the regional event.

Suriname got off to a blazing start reaching 34 for 0 in three overs as Canada also produced their fair share of haphazard fielding and a pair of no-balls by Khurram Chohan, with an ensuing free hit smashed by Akram to the boundary to end the third. Akram belted a quickfire 26 off 17 with five boundaries before he was dislodged courtesy of a diving catch at square leg by Gunasekera off the bowling of Cheema.

Suriname's innings began to fizzle out after the wicket of Akram with Kemraj Hardat scoring a lethargic 12 off 22 at number three before he was lazily runout by Chohan from short third man after waltzing too far down the wicket. Suriname eventually finished on 133 for 6 as Patandin also top-scored with 36 off 35 balls at number three to round off his Man of the Match performance in a losing cause.
