yes, he can! In fact, he can do it this very ball! Wide yorker but Russell is camping deep in his crease, waiting for it. Opens the bat face and glides it superbly past backward point to seal the deal and send the Knight Riders back to the top of the table!
Kings vs Trinbago, 24th Match at Tarouba, CPL 2023, Sep 10 2023 - Match Result
Trinbago won by 7 wickets (with 7 balls remaining)
11:43pm Right. That will be that from us. A big day in the men's CPL, with the Knight Riders confirming a top-two spot and the Guyana Amazon Warriors on the brink of doing so. The CPL now takes a two-day break before returning from Guyana. Until then, this is me (Shashwat) signing off on behalf of Binoy George and everyone else at ESPNcricinfo. Goodbye and take care!
Mark Deyal, Player of the Match: (On what this innings means) I want to thank the almighty for this opportunity tonight. This is special, playing in front of my home crowd and playing for my home team. We had some discussions in the dressing room, we knew how important these two points were. Nice thing about this team is that everyone enjoys each other's success. I talked to Dwayne and he asked me to give himself a chance at the start. I took that advice today and it paid off. (On partnership with Tucker) We ran really well between the wickets and put the pressure on the bowlers when they bowled bad balls. That partnership set up the game. Nicholas messaged me today and told me tonight is my night and just happy to perform. Going to Guyana, at the top of the table, is a nice feeling. Gives us a chance to relax and be a little more well-rested. Everyone is putting up their hands and it is a total team effort.
The Knight Riders, courtesy of this win, are now assured of a top-two berth, which is a big advantage considering the playoff structure. In simpler words, even if they were to lose Qualifier 1, they will have another shot at making the final. This is how the points table looks, and the Kings, having lost today, have to now hope for the Guyana Amazon Warriors to drop a lot of points to make the top two.
11:30pm Another clinical run-chase by the Knight Riders. It was similar to yesterday in that Russell applied the finishing touches but the make-up of this chase could not have been more different. Guptill and Pooran both fell relatively early, leaving Deyal and Tucker to do the heavy lifting. The former, in particular, struggled at the start but grew in stature as the innings progressed. The latter remained unbeaten at the end, ensuring that Russell had the requisite foundation to tee off.
The Kings, on the other hand, would be disappointed with their lack of incision. They accounted for Guptill and Pooran in the powerplay but failed to drive home that advantage in the middle overs, with Pierre and Raza combining for four overs and giving away 43 runs. Joseph, despite picking two wickets, was also expensive and with the Kings not having a lot of runs on the board, they ultimately fell well short.
3 off 8. Can Russell finish it this over?
Russell muscle! What a shot under pressure! Dug into the track outside off stump and it gets up to Russell's shoulder. But he somehow manages to stand up tall and forehand it over the bowler's head for six!
but he instead bowls a wide outside off stump. Good thing Russell did not get bat on it. Even a faint tickle and that would have raced past third man with that pace
10 off 9 now. Joseph needs to rip Russell out to give his team any chance
short and wide outside off stump. Russell, already standing on off stump, reaches out for it and drills it down to long off. Comes back for two as well!
right out of the middle and no prizes for guessing where it lands! Short enough and this is into Russell's wheelhouse. Gives it an almighty thump and sends it flat over deep mid wicket!
sharp back of a length delivery outside off. Russell tries to smash the cover off the ball and gets nowhere close to it
18 needed off 12 balls and this is still the Knight Riders' game to lose. Joseph, though, has one over left and that could be the final roll of the dice for the Kings. For what it is worth, the Royals needed 18 off 12 in the earlier game today, and they lost
quicker and flatter on a length on off stump. Russell drags it towards deep mid wicket for one
fetch this! The bowler dangles the carrot on a length outside off and Russell bites his hand off. Clears his front leg and smears it high and long over deep mid wicket!
googly on a back of a length just outside off. Russell does not have much room to work with and cuts it straight to cover point
Russell on strike now. Crucial three-ball passage (potentially) coming up
Tucker advances too early and that allows the bowler to pull his length back. Dabbed into the off side for a single
short and fired down the leg side. Tucker pulls it straight to the fielder at short fine leg. Massive missed opportunity!
he has to deal with Tucker first, though! Into the slot on off stump and Tucker is down the track in a flash. Swings through the line and batters it over the bowler's head!
Hatzoglou to bowl out. He might fancy his chances against Russell, if he can get his lines and lengths right
back of a length outside off. Russell tries to hit it too hard and all he manages to do is chop it back to the keeper
Russell finally gets it right! Length delivery hung outside off stump. On this occasion, Russell holds his shape a lot longer and bashes it over extra cover for four!
oh dear! Length delivery outside off stump. Russell continues swinging like a rusty gate and only swats away a few flies in the process
hard length, into the pitch outside off. This one zips through and Russell, looking to smash it into next week, is beaten for pace
short and wide outside off again. A swish and a miss but called a wide
Interestingly, the fielder who was at deep mid wicket, suggested that Hatzoglou's body had touched the rope when in contact with the ball. The third umpire clearly had a different opinion, though
wild short delivery bowled a mile outside off stump. Left alone by Russell and called a wide by the umpire
dug into the track outside off stump. Russell goes feeling for it very tentatively and sees the ball sneak past the outside edge
Right. Here is Russell. Up against Joseph. 36 needed off 23
has he taken that? Has that gone for six? Length delivery on leg stump. Deyal swings for the hills and sends it to the moon. When it comes down, Hatzoglou, stationed at deep square leg, catches it. But did his foot touch the rope? He tried to juggle it and eventually held on, flicking it up from a prone position and then catching it one-handed. But if his foot touched the rope when he was in contact with the ball, it will count for nothing. Looks like his right knee might just have hit the boundary cushion when he was falling down. Either way, this is a very close call. The umpire has a decision, and he gives it out. The only question was whether his knee hit the cushion and the third umpire reckoned it did not. The rest of the catch was clean enough and Deyal has to go!
