HAT-TRICK!! Bowled 'im neck and crop! Googly through the gate of No. 11, finishes the game in style and then sets off on a victory lap for the ages! Tahir bags a five-for as Fire are doused for 91. Phoenix win by 93 runs, and boy have the home crowd have been treated to a special show tonight!
Phoenix vs Fire, 23rd Match at Birmingham, Men's Hundred, Aug 09 2021 - Match Result
9.35pm: Well, that was a Hundred ton of fun! Moeen's Butterkist boys have strolled off with the points and the plaudits tonight, and they look to be flying towards the back-end of the tournament, with the knockouts knocking. Welsh Fire probably can't make it through, but they've had some pretty bad luck with player availability and injuries. Anyway, Matt's just trying to condense all that into a concise summary, and we'll be back for more from Old Trafford tomorrow. Bye!
9.25pm: Whadda way to finish, the first hat-trick of the Hundred - and the third of Tahir's T20 (sshhhh!) career - as Phoenix pull off an absolute thumping to go top of the table. It was set up with the bat, Will Smeed and Moeen Ali blitzing half-centuries on the way to the highest total in the tournament so far. Welsh Fire had to come out firing, but were immediately up against it in the chase as Adam Milne struck in the first set; Ben Duckett also fell early, and with rate skyrocketing, it was over to Immy. Speaking of whom...
Imran Tahir is named Hero of the Match for his 5 for 25: "Our batters set the tone for us, gave us a very big total to defend, and the seamers did a good job in the first 4-5 [sets]. My job is to take wickets, it's been difficult, pretty flat tracks but good for the crowds. [Entertainment?] We're living a sad time, but to come and play in front of the crowd is a great feeling. I'm really glad for the fans coming to support cricket and the Hundred. I don't take things for granted, every opportunity is an honour for me. To be sincere to my job I try my best. [Hat-trick ball] I knew what I was going to bowl, felt the batter would be ready for the quicker one so I tried to bowl the quick googly, I'm grateful it came right. Been hard work at practice, we take our job serious. Nice to come and deliver, so I hope we carry on and get to the final."
Slip and leg slip in for David Payne
skids on a straight one, hits the front pad! Tim Robinson's fingers goes straight up! Milnes is gone first ball, trapped lbw attempting to paddle his first ball... Tahir goes off on a lap of Birmingham City Centre, he's got four and is now on a hat-trick!
Matt Milnes in next
big old yahoo and it plops into the hands of mid-off! Tahir claims a third, he's having a good night out there - and why not, when you've got that many on the board to defend? Tossed up, tempts the big shot from his legspinner confrere, straight to Smeed on the edge of the circle
sidles in and lobs the ball up on middle and leg, Fletcher works it for one
Tahir returns
"And how do the 100 wickets also count as T20 wickets????" Because this is, according to the stats guys, T20, Declan
length ball, skidding through at 68mph wide of off, Qais throws the bat and misses again
flicked out full in the channel, Qais nearly whirls himself off his feet trying to connect
full length, 67mph outside off, Fletcher stands still and clubs it malevolently down to long-off
fires one into the pads, probably heading down, O'Shaughnessy not interested... but Phoenix review, presumably feeling like this is their night to spin the wheel come what may. Struck him in line, but missing leg stump. Has Lady Luck deserted them at the last??
Luke Fletcher gallops out
swung to leg, finds a fielder in the deep! Everything coming up Butterkist for Phoenix tonight... pace off outside off and White sends a big top edge towards deep square leg, Milne plunging forward to take it just above the ground
Howell for his final set
fullish on the stumps, nudged through midwicket
Qais Ahmad is next in. Fire aren't even halfway to their target
sliced to backward point! Brown gets in on the wicket-taking act, Neesham attempting to put pace on a delivery in the channel, nothing there for him to work with and it plops gently into Milne's hands off the outside half of the bat
length, another slower delivery, White pulls to deep midwicket without timing, bottom hand coming off the bat
slower ball to White, 70mph wide of the stumps, heaves hard but fails to connect
round the wicket, length ball in the channel, chopped for one into the covers
Brown now
tossed up and White has an unsuccessful hack once again
hangs back and swings hard, gets a thick inside edge that ricochets past the stumps
hoicked into the leg side, this will run away! Not fully got hold of his slog-sweep but sends it behind square
sweetly struck, sails all the way over cow corner! White metes out some of the treatment that he suffered in the Phoenix innings, uses the feet well and this came right out of the screws
slogged leg side, doesn't quite carry to Milne! Excellent diving effort from the fast man, coming in off the rope at deep square
Moeen keeps himself on for ten
pushed through and nudged for one
