AUSTRALIAN SQUAD FOR THE ASHES TOUR:
Acc. to Sydney's Daily Telegraph Mirror, the team is expected to include four newcomers, batsmen Michael Slater of New South- Wales and Matt Hayden of Queensland, all-rounder Brendon Julianof West Australia and New South Wales paceman Wayne Holdsworth. They are said to have been picked at the expense of experiencedplayers like batsman Dean Jones, the injury-plagued fast bowler BruceReid and medium pacer Mike Whitney.
The (expected) omission of Jones, one of Australia's most experienced and most exciting strokemakers, is likely to be a controversial decision. CaptainAllan Border is said to haveargued that he should go to England. Dropped from the side that went to New Zealand last month, Jones was called up for the 1-day series against New Zealand and played brilliantly in that. He has an outstanding record against England, averaging 50 in Test matches. Slater, a 22-year-old graduate of the Australian Cricket Academy, has scored 1,019 runs at an average of 59.94 for New South Wales this season.
FROM MCC Newsletter Issue 11, April 1993: new and familiar names. Mark Taylor, who scored 839 runs in the 1989 Ashes series, returns as VC, while the other batsmen include the consistent David Boon and the Waugh twins. Craig McDermott & the charismatic Merv Hughes lead the fast-bowling attack, backed up by newcomer Wayne Holdsworth (the leading wicket taker in the 1992-93 Sheff. Shield competetion) and left-armer Brendon Julian. Victoria med. -pacer Paul Reiffel is a similar type of bowler to Terry Alderman, who enjoyed great success in England and who narrowly missed out on a tour spot this time. Other newcomers who will be watched with interest are batsmen Matthew Hayden and Damien Martyn, as well as legspinner Shane Warne, who turned in several impressive spells over the winter, including a matchwinning haul of 7 for 52 against the West Indies at Melbourne.
