Bangladesh Cricket Board Thursday initially selected 30 cricketers to
form a national team for the 1999 World Cup Cricket to be held in the
United Kingdom from May 14 to June 20.
The selectors left out veteran Athar Ali Khan, but included two new
faces -- Imran Ahmed and Aminul Islam Bhola.
Bangladesh, the unbeaten champions of ICC, who earned the right to
play in their maiden ever World Cup, have been placed in Group B with
Australia, Pakistan, West Indies, New Zealand and Scotland.
The Group A comprises holders Sri Lanka, India, South Africa, England,
Zimbabwe and ICC runners-up Kenya.
One-day debutant Bangladesh will play their first World Cup match with
New Zealand on May 17 at Chelmsford, face former world champions West
Indies on May 21 at Dublin, meet host Scotland at Edinburgh, Australia
on May 27 at Chester-Le-Street and Pakistan on May 31 at Northampton
in the group matches.
Initially selected 30 cricketers are:
Aminul Islam Bulbul, Shahriar Hossain Bidyut, Ehsanul Haq Sezan,
Khaled Mashud Pilot, M Hassanuzzaman, Javed Omar Belim Gulla, Nasirul
Alam Nahid, Al Shahriar Rokon, Farooque Ahmed, Sanwar Hussain, Mehrab
Hussain Opee, Akram Khan, Imran Ahmed, Shafiuddin Ahmed Babu, Morshed
Ali Khan Sumon , Khaled Mahmud Sujon, Naimur Rahman Durjoy, Fahim
Muntasir Sumit, Hasibul Hussain Shanta , Mofizur Rahman Munna,
Mushfiqur Rahman Babu, Mohammad Rafique, Enamul Huq Moni, Manjurul
Islam, Aminul Islam Bhola, Neeyamur Rashid Rahul, Mahbubur Rahman
Selim, Minhajul Abedin Nannu, Jahangir Alam and Mohammed Golam
Mortuza.
The selected players will undergo training at the BKSP residential
camp in Savar before the team's departure for England in mid-April.
The 30-member squad will be reduced to 19 men in the third week of
February and finally a 15-member team will be announced in the third
week of March.
Before participating in the World Cup, Bangladesh team will play some
official practice matches with the participating teams and some other
warm up matches against English county teams.
