The Central Regional Cricket Board and the Kandy District Cricket
Association are making elaborate arrangements with cricket fans in
the hill country to collect one lakh of signatures appreciating and
endorsing the action taken by Sri Lanka skipper Arjuna Ranatunga in
defence of spinner Muthiah Muralitharan when he was called for
throwing by umpire Ross Emerson in the Carlton and United Series
limited over cricket match against England played in Australia.
The Regional Secretary of the Kandy Branch of the Cricket Board,
Janaka Pathirana, said that this action is being taken on the
requests of the cricket fans in the hill capital who have formed a
Muralitharan Fan Club. The list of signature will be sent to various
parts of the hill country. The completed list will be handed over to
Arjuna Ranatunga on his arrival in Sri Lanka after the Australian
