Hong Kong Umpires Attend ACC Umpires Course in Malaysia
HKACUS members Anoop Gidwani and Hugh Tyrwhitt-Drake attended a marathon 7-day Umpiring Course in December in Kuala Lumpur. Organised by the Asian Cricket Council, the course was run by former Test umpires K.T. Francis and Mahboob Shah, and featured 34 participants from 18 countries, including China, Burma, Iran, Afghanistan and Bhutan.
The course culminated in a 3-hour written exam, which ACU&S-qualified Anoop and Hugh are reported to be "quietly confident" of passing. The next step for the aspiring Billy Bowdens is the ACC course organised in tandem with Cricket Australia, and possible appointment to the ACC panel.
HKACUS Introductory Umpires Course success
28 men and women - players, ex-players, scorers and cricket nuts - enrolled on the Introductory Umpiring Course delivered by HKACUS Training Officer Alan Swift with assistance from Training Officer Designate Anoop Gidwani. It's a testimony to The Doyen's reputation as both an umpire and an instructor that 21 of the participants took the exam; and testimony to the excellence of the training, and indeed the calibre of course-takers, that 18 of them passed! Six of the course participants have been appointed to stand in matches in the Under-13 and Women's Leagues, where they will partnered whenever possible by experienced Sunday panel umpires.
It is hoped that a similar course will be run in the 2006-07 season. Anyone interested in gaining more umpiring knowledge, whether as an aspiring umpire or as a player-umpire, should contact the Secretary of HKACUS, Hugh Tyrwhitt-Drake, on 2786-8966, or email tyrwhitt@hotmail.com.
Hong Kong Umpires attain UK status
Congratulations to Anoop Gidwani, who has been elevated by the Association of Cricket Umpires & Scorers (based in the UK) to fully qualified status. Anoop was also voted Umpire of the Year (2004-05) by the Sunday captains.
