The eighth NatWest Series match, between England and Zimbabwe at Edgbaston, has been unexpectedly invaded by a quite unexpected element: the sun. The Birmingham crowd have turned out in their shirtsleeves - and no doubt less later on - while Zimbabwe at least will feel more at home than they have done for most of their tour.
The heat has had the effect of opening cracks on the pitch, which is reported to be rather spongy and less favourable for batting than the excellent surfaces at Riverside. Nasser Hussain won what is thought to be a good toss to win, and decided to bat.

England's capability and confidence has surfaced so rapidly with their progress in this limited-overs series. Their third victory on the trot came from yet another thoroughly efficient all-round performance which must put them in good stead for the final showdown this weekend. It should also have given them a bit of psychological advantage.

But while that may possibly be so, Zimbabwe, regardless of this defeat, are a side that have, in limited-overs cricket, performed against all odds and their record against England stood at seven victories each, until the match today. Their never-say-die spirit was much in evidence only two days ago against West Indies when, facing a daunting total of 287, they achieved victory by six wickets after losing nearly half the side for 104.

The highlight for the home side was a superb innings of 101 by opening batsman Alec Stewart, who held the batting together and enabled the team to reach 262 for the loss of eight wickets. Tight bowling then put Zimbabwe behind the clock and intensified the pressure; with a determined fifty by Neil Johnson they reached 87 for one in the 23rd over, but then a collapse, helped by some fine England bowling and fielding, sent the tourists sliding to 210 for nine wickets.

Mike Atherton and Sourav Ganguly produced a feast of high-quality strokeplay to become Lancashire record-breakers at Taunton.
Replying to a modest Somerset total of 198, the two Test players put on 192 for the first wicket in 34 overs to lead their side to a seven-wicket victory - only Lancashire's second in the National League this season.
The stand was the county's highest opening partnership in the competition, beating the 177 compiled by Graeme Fowler and Gehan Mendis against Kent at Canterbury in 1986.
